About The Position

The Store Director is responsible for the total store operations and achieving sales and profit objectives. This role plans, organizes, directs, and controls all store activities and personnel to ensure financial and other objectives are met, consistent with Company policies, procedures, and laws. The Store Director champions customer service programs, handles customer relations effectively, and promotes personalized service in each department. This position is primarily responsible for the management of overall store operations, implementing Company and Division initiatives, and communicating goals and policies to staff.

  • Identify needs, problems, and opportunities and make short- and long-term decisions in order to maximize sales and gross margins.
  • Strong business and financial knowledge.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and computer software.
  • Extensive working knowledge of profit and loss statements.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement emergency procedures, including response to equipment and computer software malfunctions.
  • Familiar with emergency plans in the event of a natural disaster, serious accident, or uncommon event(s).
  • Must cover temporarily for various positions throughout the store as required.
  • Mental alertness is necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
  • May utilize cleaning supplies and chemicals from time to time.
  • Good attendance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Champion Company and Division customer service programs to meet or exceed Division customer service goals.
  • Handle customer relations in a positive manner, including effective resolution of customer complaints.
  • Promote Albertson’s philosophy of personalized service in each department.
  • Manage overall store operations, implementing Company and Division merchandising, operating, and sales initiatives.
  • Communicate Company goals, objectives, policies, practices, and procedures to department managers and associates and ensure compliance.
  • Meet at least weekly with department heads to review ads, sales plans, and store promotions.
  • Ensure that an alternate manager conducts meetings in the Store Director’s absence.
  • Coordinate the safety committee and ensure the implementation and communication of the company’s safety and health initiatives.
  • Emphasize safety and health code compliance in all work practices.
  • Maintain good store conditions, product quality and rotation, labeling standards, and code date compliance in all departments.
  • Conduct daily inspections of store conditions and coach associates.
  • Ensure compliance with Division scheduling initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with established policies, wage and payroll guidelines, Time Clock Policy, benefit plans, grooming and dress code standards, and child labor and other employment laws.
  • Direct and participate in the training and hiring of store personnel.
  • Provide clear and accurate guidance and instruction to department managers, supervisors, and associates.
  • Monitor associate job performance and make personnel decisions such as hiring, firing, layoff, promotion, and disciplinary action, including completing necessary paperwork.
  • Consider the recommendations of Grocery and Drug Managers, or of the Assistant Store Director if the store has one, in hiring, firing, and disciplinary decisions.
  • Conduct formal associate evaluations as necessary per Division guidelines.
  • Identify training needs of key associates for future development and ensure completion of such training.
  • Build and maintain positive associate morale.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with proper cash handling procedures, proper accounting of sales, and safe procedures.
  • Control shrink.
  • Maintain and control inventory levels in the backroom areas and on the sales floor per Division directives.
  • Safeguard Company assets.
  • Develop operating budgets and control all in-store operating, maintenance, expense, and supply costs.
  • Follow proper administrative procedures and complete, or oversee the completion of, all required reports.
  • Ensure accurate inventory of all merchandise, supplies, and equipment.
  • Recommend to district management the expenditure for improvement or repair of store equipment and building.
  • Properly conduct or oversee inventories and independent audits.
  • Implement emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.
  • Create and maintain positive community relations.
  • Develop, promote, and maintain positive communication channels with manufacturer’s representatives, Store, Division, and Corporate personnel, and unions, where applicable.
  • Monitor market conditions, trends, and competitors’ activities.
  • Review and approve all department schedules in advance of posting to ensure appropriate staffing and adequate coverage.
  • Resolve associate complaints, including complaints of discrimination, harassment, working off the clock, and violations of the law, with guidance and support from the Human Resources Department.
  • Safely operate and handle all equipment and hazardous material.
  • Provide suggestions, feedback, and effective recommendations to District Sales Manager or Director of Operations, and Division management teams on operational, personnel, and other issues.
  • Maintain and safeguard confidentiality concerning associates, store sales, and Company information.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, consistent with the law and records retention policies.
  • Perform all job duties with honesty and integrity and in compliance with Company policies and procedures.
  • Treat associates consistently, fairly, and with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
