About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician Complex Care supports the trauma, transplant, neurosurgery, and cardiovascular surgery service lines. The role decontaminates, disinfects, cleans, sterilizes, and/or appropriately packages supplies, instruments, and equipment according to manufacturer and regulatory guidelines, and maintains documentation of these processes. The technician also regularly tests equipment to confirm it functions properly for daily processing duties.

This is a full-time night-shift position in the OR department at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. The work includes processing instruments used in operating-room procedures and maintaining sterilized instruments and storage areas.

Requirements

• High attention to detail.
• Less than one year of applicable experience is listed.
• Sterile processing technician experience is listed as relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

• IAHCSMM certification is preferred but not required.
• Experience in SPD, SPT, a sterile processing or surgical technology program, medical equipment preparation, central service, distribution, medical instrument technology, sterilization, or autoclave work.

Responsibilities

• Pre-clean soiled instruments at the point of care.
• Don and doff personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Soak instruments in enzymatic detergent and scrub all instrument surfaces.
• Use standard washers and ultrasonic washers according to manufacturer recommendations.
• Complete final rinses using appropriate solutions.
• Inspect instruments for proper maintenance.
• Package items for sterilization and autoclaving.
• Ensure required biological tests are completed and logged, with appropriate follow-up when a test fails.
• Test autoclaves, sterilizers, and other equipment to ensure proper functionality.
• Operate autoclave and sterilizer equipment according to guidelines, including removing equipment from service when appropriate.
• Maintain storage areas for sterilized items and protect package integrity according to regulatory guidelines.
• Transport instruments appropriately according to their clean or dirty status.
• Document processing activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
