About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning and sterilizing medical equipment, instruments, and supplies. The role retrieves contaminated supplies, delivers sterile supplies, maintains inventory, and prepares sterile instrument trays for surgeries, examinations, and procedures. The technician tests sterilization equipment and reports issues or problems. The technician operates required equipment and machinery safely and accurately, prepares, assembles, inspects, and sterilizes instruments according to applicable parameters, and cares for instruments using appropriate cleaning agents and lubricants. The role also supports infection-control standards and the safety of patients, medical staff, and other personnel. This position is at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center and is scheduled for a full-time night shift from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Certified Central Service Technician certification required through CBSPD or HSPA (IAHCSMM).
Knowledge of case cart preparation systems, surgical instruments, and sterilization methods including steam, HLD, and hydrogen.
Basic computer knowledge, including use of an instrument tracking system.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods and lift heavy surgical sets, and to push and pull sterilization transport carts and case carts.
Ability to work quickly and efficiently, pay close attention to detail, and understand the principles involved in assigned tasks.

Responsibilities

Operate required equipment and machinery accurately and safely; prepare, assemble, and sterilize instruments and supplies according to sterilization parameters.
Handle and care for instruments appropriately, including selecting suitable cleaning agents and lubricants.
Peel-pack supplies and instruments, wrap instruments for sterilization, and inspect instruments for usability, function, completeness, and cleanliness.
Provide safe care to patients, staff, and visitors while following applicable policies, procedures, standards, and service-quality expectations.
Clean, set up, sterilize, and distribute instruments according to the schedule for each shift.
Handle and dispose of infectious waste appropriately.
Follow Standard Precautions, including use of appropriate protective barriers such as gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and safety glasses.
Retrieve contaminated supplies and deliver sterile supplies.
Maintain inventory and prepare sterile instrument trays for surgeries, examinations, and procedures.
Test sterilization equipment and report issues or problems.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
