About The Position

This skilled liaison position uses knowledge, critical thinking, judgment, and communication skills to improve services for surgeons and patients. The technician proactively collaborates with operating room staff, vendors, and sterile processing staff to provide appropriate instrumentation, strengthen the relationship between Sterile Processing and the OR, increase customer satisfaction, and reduce patient delays or cancellations.

The role includes coordinating instrument availability and case preparation, prioritizing processing work, and communicating tray status and schedule changes. It also performs instrument decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization activities; maintains required documentation; and follows infection-control and industry standards. The technician also helps educate and train fellow associates. As part of a High Reliability Organization, the role requires a focus on safety, quality, and efficiency.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Certification through the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), or obtain certification within 90 days.
• Three to four years of sterile processing (SPD) experience.
• Instrumentation and procedural knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with instrument vendors to understand upcoming case needs and coordinate sterile processing so instruments are available.
• Coordinate and communicate schedule changes between the operating room and sterile processing; expedite decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of priority trays; and communicate needed-tray status to Team Leads and OR Leads.
• Review next-day case pick tickets daily to ensure needs can be met without interruption of service.
• Decontaminate, disinfect, and clean reusable surgical instruments using mechanical or handwashing methods while following OSHA safety standards.
• Apply knowledge of steam and chemical sterilization processes and techniques, including appropriate documentation, storage, and transportation; understand sterilizer mechanical and chemical indicators and properly use and interpret biological monitoring systems.
• Enter, modify, and search for relevant information in the instrument tracking system.
• Apply knowledge of surgical case preparation and correctly identify and retrieve instruments and supplies for scheduled cases or upon request.
• Incorporate infection-control guidelines when transferring, storing, and transporting sterile packages.
• Follow and promote industry standards and best practices supported by AAMI and AORN.
• Aid in educating and training fellow associates.
• Focus on safety, quality, and efficiency when performing job duties.
