Pratt STEAM Lab provides free in-school and after-school classes to over 260 middle school and high school students annually. We offer rigorous science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) programming, augmented by academic tutoring, SAT prep and college counseling. Our program draws on students’ innate curiosity, imagination and creativity to introduce them to a wide range of scientific and technological fields. Classes are run at partner schools, at Pratt’s state-of-the-art maker space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and on Pratt’s main campus. Pratt STEAM Lab is funded by New York State STEP (Science & Technology Entry Program), which aims to increase the number of economically disadvantaged students prepared to enter college, and improve their participation rate in mathematics, science, technology, health-related fields, and the licensed professions. Pratt STEAM Lab seeks exceptional instructors for classes and workshops that vary in length from one day workshops to 10-week courses meeting once a week. Pratt STEAM Lab seeks to maintain a robust pool of instructors by accepting applications from new instructors to teach established non-credit courses and workshops to students ages 12 to 18. Current offerings include Animation, Creative Computing, Sustainable Fashion, Bio-mimicry, Woodworking, Plant Based Dyes and Scientific Illustration, Weaving and Industrial Design. Additional areas of interest include Bio-Materials, 3d Printing. Urban Design and Net Zero Architecture. Instructors are expected to develop their own syllabi and to ensure that their classes fit cohesively into the larger program structure.
