Directs, operates, and maintains powerhouse equipment on an assigned shift. This role involves operating and instructing powerhouse workers in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of boilers, furnaces, and auxiliary equipment. The Stationary Engineer will also perform rounds of the powerhouse, read meters and gauges, inspect equipment for malfunctions or repair needs, and make necessary adjustments. Monitoring power consumption, starting and stopping generators, turbines, pumps, compressors, boilers, and chillers are key responsibilities. The role includes maintaining the powerhouse log, recording essential data, and ensuring sufficient fuel supply. Additionally, the position requires operating computer equipment and specialized programs for data management and equipment control, as well as maintaining gas turbines, gas compressors, condensate polishers, and water softeners. Cleaning plant and equipment, testing water, and adding treatment chemicals may also be required. The Stationary Engineer may also answer telephones and radios, relay messages, train and direct student employees or employees in lower pay grades, and assist other tradespersons.
