About The Position

The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a Stationary Engineer II to operate and maintain central utility plant equipment in Bar Harbor, Maine. Under minimal supervision, the role performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on boilers, steam turbines, chillers, emergency generators, incinerators, fuel systems, and related equipment. The work takes place in a highly regulated critical environment supporting data centers, live animal colonies, and sensitive research facilities 24/7. These systems maintain conditions needed for research integrity and animal welfare, and failures or incorrect operation can interrupt scientific operations, compromise research data, or harm animals. The position provides rotating facilities coverage on a 24/7/365 basis, including rotating 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. The engineer serves as primary facilities maintenance and operations response personnel outside normal operating hours, diagnosing and correcting plant issues or contacting on-call maintenance personnel when additional support is needed. The role also includes keeping detailed operational and maintenance records for internal use and state and federal agencies. Occasional travel may be required for training or maintenance support at other sites. Level II technicians are expected to independently resolve complex technical issues, train and mentor junior technicians, and demonstrate initiative and sound judgment while troubleshooting with minimal supervision.
