About The Position

Iowa Prison Industries is seeking an experienced operational leader to serve as a State Industries Supervisor overseeing Canteen operations. Working under the direction of the Public Service Executive (PSE1), this frontline leadership role provides operational supervision and administrative oversight for staff and incarcerated individuals within the program. You will directly manage a team of 4 State Industries Product Technicians and oversee a $7,000,000 canteen budget to ensure the efficient, secure, and cost-effective delivery of goods and services.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa Driver's License.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, walk on unpaved surfaces, climb steps/ladders, and regularly lift loads of 50 pounds or more.
  • Supervisory or operational leadership experience in production, inventory management, purchasing, or secure facility operations.
  • Experience supervising staff and evaluating performance.
  • Strong background in budget analysis, inventory control, vendor management, and effective verbal/written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to enforce safety and security policies while maintaining institutional order.
  • Two-and-a-half years of full-time work experience in the direction of employees in one of the following areas related to the manufacture/delivery of Iowa State Industries products or services: Wood Furniture Fabrication, Upholstery Fabrication, Braille Production, Graphics Arts Production, Chemical Formulation, Sign Fabrication, Warehouse Operations, Service Center Operation, Industrial Safety, Manufacturing Support Services and Production Control.
  • Two-and-a-half years of full-time work experience in the supervision and training of correctional residents or employees in a state industries program.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a State Industries Production/Sales Coordinator, one year of full-time work as a State Industries Production Technician, or two years of full-time work as a Correctional Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day work assignments, manage production schedules, approve leave and overtime, and oversee off-duty call-ins as staffing requires.
  • Participate in hiring by interviewing and recommending candidates and conduct first-line performance evaluations.
  • Oversee daily inventory on all canteen items to maintain out-of-stock levels below 3% and minimize shrinkage.
  • Analyze division income and expenses, collaborate with purchasing to secure cost-effective raw materials/capital goods, manage vendor relationships, and establish re-order points.
  • Produce the annual catalog with quarterly updates.
  • Enforce institutional security policies and safety rules in a correctional setting, respond to critical incidents or disturbances, and maintain a safe environment for staff, the public, and incarcerated workers.
  • Observe and document workers' performance, technical development, and social adjustment.
  • Attend resident council meetings at least once per year at each facility to gather feedback and evaluate offering additions or removals.
