About The Position

This hazardous duty position is assigned to the Metal Shop, which produces items such as picnic table frames, aluminum signpost frames, plow pins, sign and cone holders, pipe gates, commissary carts, wing carts, truck boxes, and metal silverware holders. This role combines hands-on manufacturing and production oversight with the opportunity to teach incarcerated individuals practical metalworking skills. This position is full-time, 36.25 hours per week, 6:15 AM - 1:30 PM.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in a manufacturing environment involved in the areas of production, production planning and/or quality control which must have included some responsibility for the production output of other workers.
  • Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification at the time of appointment.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain either a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, a Commercial Driver’s License or both.
  • Incumbents may be required to travel.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment involved in occupational area.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of production planning and control.
  • Considerable interpersonal skills, oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret plans, blueprints and diagrams where required.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations.
  • Ability to train, instruct and supervise inmates in methods and techniques of the trade.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.
  • Supervisory ability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience welding, sheet-metal fabrication, machining and supervisory experience within a production manufacturing environment.
  • Experience training, instructing, coaching, monitoring and evaluating employees.
  • Experience resolving production problems and communicating work instructions to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in production planning and production output, quality control, safety inspections and enforcing safety procedures.
  • Experience with industry computer programming such as AutoCAD, and/or SolidWorks, and/or CNC software.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel to create and modify spreadsheets.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and instructing incarcerated individuals in metal fabrication, manufacturing methods, proper use of tools and materials, safety procedures, and equipment maintenance, cleaning, and repair.
  • Planning daily production activities and assigning work.
  • Generating and maintaining cost reports, production and inventory data, and time records.
  • Maintaining discipline and enforcing security measures within the assigned area.
  • Conducting performance reviews of assigned incarcerated individuals.
  • Performing related duties as required.
  • Supervises and instructs inmates in proper methods and techniques of manufacturing process or service, proper use of tools and materials, necessary safety rules and procedures and maintenance, cleaning and repair of equipment.
  • Plans and routes work to be performed, assigning inmates to specific tasks.
  • Estimates needs and requisitions supplies, materials and equipment necessary.
  • Supervises maintenance and/or repair of equipment or arranges for outside service and material.
  • Maintains cost, production inventory and time records and makes necessary reports on operations.
  • Maintains discipline and enforces security measures within assigned areas.
  • Maintains appropriate security procedures for tools, equipment, chemicals, etc.
  • Reviews and evaluates performance of assigned inmates.
  • Submits reports relative to inmate disciplinary actions, recommendations for "good time", furloughs, reassignments, etc.
  • May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies.
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle.
