Standards Engineer
About The Position
This role is part of the INDOT Standards and Policy Division, one of seven divisions within the Central Office Engineering Department. A standards engineer manages update requests for the design manual and standard drawings from start to finish. They investigate each issue, identify stakeholders and relevant guidance, and research actions taken by other State DOTs. After defining the request, they set a publication timeline and allocate resources. The standards engineer coordinates meetings, updates, and the workflow. Upon completion, they publish a design memo and send a notification to provide designers with clear, actionable information. A high-level knowledge of survey, utilities, hydraulics, geotechnical, structural, roadway, traffic and safety, pavement, real estate, and environmental practices is preferred. Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills are required. Expert-level proficiency is required in Word, Excel, Acrobat, SharePoint, and MicroStation. Intermediate skills are needed in ProjectWise, OpenRoads Designer, AutoTURN, ArcGIS, PowerPoint, and WinSCP or equivalent. Standards engineers participate in steering committees, design review meetings, peer discussions, and statewide software adoption initiatives. A Professional Engineering license is not required for this position. Candidates who have an Engineering degree and a current Engineer in Training license (EIT), but do not hold a professional license, may be hired at a lower minimum salary and are eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones including years of experience and obtaining their Professional Engineering license. Upon obtaining a Professional Engineer license, the salary traditionally starts at an annual salary of $75,010 but may be commensurate with education or work experience. This position is with INDOT’s Central Office in Indianapolis.
Requirements
- A registered Professional Engineer license in Indiana is required; exceptions may be considered for candidates holding an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification who are actively pursuing PE licensure in Indiana, provided they are applying for a lower-level classification.
- Must have a valid Driver's License.
- High level of proficiency with engineering software and provide technical expertise to the group and other divisions, addressing technical gaps as needed.
- Ability to work effectively with professionals across multiple disciplines and communicate using appropriate technical language.
- Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures to the engineering specialty.
- Broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features (such as roads, bridges, pavement, or traffic structures) in accordance with engineering design and construction standards, principles, and methods.
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply computer-aided design and drafting functions.
- Ability to perform the algebraic, trigonometric, and higher mathematical computations applied to design operations.
- Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities
- Manage update requests for the Indiana Design Manual and Standard Drawings from initial request to completion.
- Serve as a resource for the Agency’s established standards.
- Interpret laws, regulations, and guidelines within the assigned area, and review for completeness and economic and technical feasibility.
- Assist in analyzing engineering data and developing technical guidelines, technology initiatives, training course materials, and other technical documents.
- Ensure policy and best practices are actively deployed.
