About The Position

The Staff Vision Engineer is responsible for developing machine vision technology of manufacturing equipment systems for automated inspections of high-quality components used in medical devices. Your work will contribute to improving the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of manufacturing processes across Beckman’s global manufacturing sites. This position reports to the Automation Engineering Manager and is part of the Global Equipment Automation team located in Chaska, MN, and will be an onsite role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in engineering including machine vision with 9+ years of experience, or master’s with 7+ years.
  • Demonstrated and advanced expertise in designing and implementing automated vision inspection system platforms such as Cognex and Keyence.
  • Configure and program vision system hardware and software such as camera, optics, lighting and image processing tool.
  • Integrate vision systems with automation platforms including PLC’s and SCADA systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage and drive automation projects including interfacing external suppliers & internal resources, design reviews, debugging, installation, and training within project specs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, capable of articulating complex technical concepts for stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates a proactive mindset for process optimization and problem-solving.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience deploying AI and deep learning algorithms into production.
  • Experience with other machine automation software platforms such as: Allen Bradley PLC’s, robotics, motion control, electrical drawing packages such as AutoCAD.
  • Experience with medical device regulatory requirements (IQ,OQ, PQ), and compliance requirements related to deploying machine vision system within medical device industry.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary machine vision strategic liaison over global manufacturing operations to develop a comprehensive global roadmap for machine vision, align initiatives with the company's overarching business strategy, growth objectives, operational needs, and sustainment.
  • Design, configure, and develop image acquisition manufacturing equipment systems, including vision platform selection, camera selection, optic lens selections, lighting, and calibrations techniques.
  • Select and integrate appropriate components: industrial cameras such as area/line scan cameras, GigE/USB/Camera Link. PC based and smart cameras. Lensing - telecentric and non-telecentric, color filters, various illumination methods such as back/front lighting, low angle, coaxial, and bright field.
  • Implement advanced algorithms: edge detection, morphological operations such as erosion and dilation, sub-pixel accuracy measurement, camera calibration and deep learning-based inspections.
  • Actively lead design reviews with contractors, engineering consultants, and other project team members.
  • Influence vision related engineering decisions, provide guidance, and project status updates as required for project review and other company meetings.
  • Mentors junior engineers and contributes to hiring and onboarding.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in vision inspection technologies and methodologies.
