About The Position

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform used by millions of companies to accept payments, grow revenue, and pursue new business opportunities. Payment Intelligence comprises product teams building AI-first solutions for fraud and abuse prevention, payment optimization, disputes, authentication, and merchant analytics. The team includes machine-learning and full-stack software engineers whose work affects Stripe transactions and helps create revenue opportunities and protect the broader ecosystem.

As a Staff Engineer on Payment Intelligence, you will work across the product portfolio to promote consistent, efficient, and effective engineering. The role calls for experience with large distributed systems on the critical path, comfort working across the software stack, and collaboration with machine-learning teams and models. You will set technical strategy across multiple experiences, establish practices that support high-quality engineering at scale, and work with merchants and cross-functional partners to build payment intelligence products.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in a strategic technical leadership role.
• Experience leading engineering teams working on distributed systems, API design, and user-facing products.
• A proven track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that accelerate business growth.
• Ability to drive projects at a high level while remaining hands-on and contributing directly to technical solutions as needed.
• Effective communication skills and a proven ability to work across teams, organizations, and functions.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with payment systems and/or fraud detection.
• Familiarity with machine-learning systems in production, including model serving, training pipelines, observability, and evaluation.
• Prior experience building products from 0 to 1, from an initial concept through a production system, and clear opinions about what makes that process successful or unsuccessful.
• Experience with a range of software languages and frameworks; the stack includes Java, Ruby, Python, TypeScript, Kafka, Flyte, Airflow, and Mongo.
• Experience navigating ambiguity in a fast-moving organization, making technical decisions with incomplete information, and adapting as constraints change.

Responsibilities

• Define technical strategy for multiple experiences across the Payment Intelligence portfolio, focusing on quality and performance.
• Champion a quality-first engineering culture by establishing standards, tooling, and processes that make it easier to ship high-quality code at scale.
• Partner with some of Stripe’s largest merchants to co-build the future of payment-centric intelligence.
• Partner with product, design, and machine-learning colleagues to deliver high-quality software.
• Contribute across the stack, including infrastructure and foundational systems, frontend, APIs, and machine-learning-adjacent work.
