About The Position

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform used by businesses to accept payments, grow revenue, and pursue new opportunities. Its mission is to increase the GDP of the internet.

Payment Intelligence consists of product teams building AI-first solutions for fraud and abuse (Radar), payment optimization (AuthBoost), disputes, authentication, and merchant analytics. The team includes machine engineering and full-stack software engineers whose work affects Stripe transactions, creates revenue opportunities, and helps protect the broader ecosystem. The role offers the opportunity to work with large-scale technologies and directly with merchants.

As a Staff Engineer on Payment Intelligence, you will work across the product portfolio to promote consistent, efficient, and effective engineering. Success requires experience with large distributed systems on the critical path, comfort working across the stack, and the ability to collaborate with machine learning teams and models.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in a strategic technical leadership role.
• Experience leading engineering teams working on distributed systems, API design, and user-facing products.
• A proven track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that accelerate business growth.
• Ability to drive projects at a high level while also contributing hands-on to technical solutions as needed.
• Effective communication skills and a proven ability to work across teams, organizations, and functions.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with payment systems and/or fraud detection.
• Familiarity with machine learning systems in production, including model serving, training pipelines, observability, and evaluation.
• Prior experience building products from zero to one, from an initial concept to a production system, and clear opinions about what makes that process successful or unsuccessful.
• Experience across software languages and frameworks such as Java, Ruby, Python, TypeScript, Kafka, Flyte, Airflow, and Mongo.
• Experience navigating ambiguity in a fast-moving organization, making confident technical decisions with incomplete information, and adapting when new constraints emerge.

Responsibilities

• Define technical strategy for multiple experiences across the Payment Intelligence portfolio, focusing on quality and performance.
• Champion a quality-first engineering culture by establishing standards, tooling, and processes that enable high-quality code to be shipped at scale.
• Partner with some of Stripe’s largest merchants to co-build the future of payment-centric intelligence.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and machine learning colleagues to deliver high-quality software.
• Work across the stack, contributing to infrastructure and foundational systems as well as frontend, API, and ML-adjacent work.
