Staff Software Engineer (AI Agents)

Traba•San Francisco, CA
•$240,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Traba is building an AI operating system for the industrial supply chain. The company began by supplying temporary workforces to industrial businesses and has expanded into AI agents that automate workflows, derive insights from data, and support decision-making for logistics providers, manufacturers, 3PLs, and other industrial businesses. The Staff Software Engineer (AI Agents) will be a founding member of the Agents team, responsible for building Traba’s agentic platform: the layer that synthesizes marketplace data, connects to customers’ operational systems, and acts autonomously within facility workflows. The role owns the agents, evaluations, and model strategy used across Traba’s product, and partners with the CTO on core architecture, quality, and reliability. It also brings customer and operational insight into a new 0-to-1 product. The engineer will set technical direction through hands-on implementation, establish agent-building and evaluation practices, and help build and lead the team. The position involves working with customers and operators in the field, translating operational needs into durable product capabilities and repeatable deployment patterns, and collaborating with product and operations leadership on the platform roadmap.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on production work on LLM- or agent-based systems.
  • Deep experience with Python and/or TypeScript/Node.js.
  • Experience designing distributed systems, APIs, and data models using PostgreSQL and modern messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a substantial production agent system, including orchestration, tool use, retrieval, evaluations, observability, and cost and latency tuning.
  • A history of leading 0-to-1 builds in early-stage environments and comfort working with ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to lead customer workshops, write design documents, and recruit teammates.
  • Experience shipping production agent systems at scale, designing harnesses and orchestration patterns, owning evaluations, and supporting systems in production.
  • Ability to assess tradeoffs among prompting, fine-tuning, retrieval, and code.
  • Ability to learn customers’ operational processes and use that knowledge to shape architecture.
  • Experience setting technical direction through hands-on implementation and making decisions about tools, model providers, evaluation infrastructure, agent observability, and abstractions.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in at least one of vertical AI or AI-agent companies, forward-deployed engineering, or an AI-native data company.
  • Supply chain, logistics, or industrial experience.

Responsibilities

  • Architect Traba’s agent platform, including the orchestration runtime, evaluation and observability stack, integration layer for internal and customer systems such as WMS, TMS, and ERP, and shared patterns for agents.
  • Own foundational technical decisions covering model strategy, harness design, retrieval and memory architecture, tool and MCP surface, and quality measurement.
  • Spend time in the field with customers and operators and translate observations into durable product capabilities and repeatable deployment patterns.
  • Build evaluation as an engineering discipline, including datasets, graders, regression suites, and experimentation tooling.
  • Hire and mentor engineers and set the standard for engineering quality.
  • Partner with the CTO, product, and operations leadership on the multi-year platform roadmap.
  • Select foundational tools, integrate model providers, design evaluation infrastructure, and contribute working examples to establish technical direction.
