Software Engineer (AI Agents)

Fluent, LLC•New York, NY
•$130,000 - $155,000•Remote

About The Position

Fluent is hiring its first dedicated AI Engineer to build and operate production AI agents and automated workflows for its advertising network. The role sits in Core Engineering and works closely with Data Engineering, Data Science, Solution Architecture, and business teams. It focuses on using Fluent’s Databricks lakehouse as the trusted data hub for workflows, with responsibility for the complete lifecycle from business scoping and development through deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff. The engineer will build data foundations and integrations across advertising and partner platforms, CRM, support, and finance systems; make agent quality measurable; and replace brittle automations with maintained, observable workflows. The role also involves developing reusable components and enabling business teams to access platform data and actions directly. Fluent expects the engineer to handle consumer data in line with privacy and compliance standards, use approved AI tools, demonstrate work regularly, document it, and share learnings. The role is fully remote in the United States, with occasional travel to Fluent’s New York headquarters. Within the first 90 days, the engineer is expected to ship a complete workflow with a named business owner and results Finance can validate. By six months, the expectation is to have several workflows in production, a reusable component adopted by another builder, and a clear view of the next quarter’s backlog.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software or data engineering experience, with strong Python and SQL skills.
  • Experience building and shipping at least one LLM-powered application or agent that real users depend on, using tool calling, retrieval, structured outputs, and evaluation.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and Workflows) or a comparable lakehouse, or sufficient data engineering experience to ramp up quickly.
  • Experience integrating SaaS and internal systems through REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth.
  • Ability to test and instrument work, manage costs, and determine when a workflow is ready to be handed off to another owner.
  • Clear communication with nontechnical colleagues and comfort running working sessions with business teams.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot as part of a modern engineering workflow.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Databricks Mosaic AI (Agent Framework, Model Serving, Vector Search), Genie, Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines, Lakebase, or Databricks Apps.
  • Experience building MCP servers or working with the Claude Developer Platform or Agent SDK.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as n8n.
  • Experience integrating HubSpot, Zendesk, NetSuite, or Jira.
  • Experience in ad tech, performance marketing, or another environment that handles regulated consumer data.

Responsibilities

  • Ship production agents and automated workflows from a prioritized, business-validated backlog, owning each from scoping through build, deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff.
  • Build the data foundation in Databricks, including Unity Catalog tables and views, Lakeflow pipelines, Lakeflow Connect ingestion, and Genie spaces.
  • Bring data from advertising and partner platforms, CRM, support desk, and finance systems into a trusted central location.
  • Work with Data Science to measure agent quality through evaluation sets, accuracy and drift tracking, cost and latency instrumentation, audit fields, and failure alerts.
  • Integrate Fluent systems through APIs, webhooks, MCP servers, and orchestration tools such as Databricks Workflows, n8n, and GitHub Actions.
  • Replace brittle point-to-point automations with maintained and observable workflows.
  • Partner with Core Engineering to expose platform data and actions as APIs for use by agents and business teams.
  • Build reusable Claude skills, MCP connectors, prompt and evaluation libraries, and playbooks.
  • Handle consumer data according to Fluent’s privacy and compliance standards, use approved AI tools, and coordinate credentials and access with IT and Security.
  • Demo work weekly, document it in Confluence, and share learnings in brown bags and tech talks.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot review as a normal part of the engineering workflow.
