Software Engineer (AI Agents)

Fluent, LLC
•$130,000 - $155,000•Remote

About The Position

Fluent is hiring its first dedicated AI Engineer to build production AI agents and automated workflows for its advertising network. The role sits in Core Engineering and partners closely with Data Engineering, Data Science, Solution Architecture, and business teams. It focuses on building trusted data foundations and reliable actions on Fluent’s Databricks lakehouse, and on taking workflows from business scoping through deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff. The engineer will create integrations across advertising, partner, CRM, support, and finance systems; make agent quality measurable; and build reusable tools and components that other Fluent builders can use. The role is fully remote in the United States, with occasional travel to the New York headquarters. The first-90-day goal is to ship an end-to-end workflow with a named business owner and Finance-validated results; by six months, the role is expected to have several workflows in production and a reusable component adopted by another builder.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software or data engineering experience, with strong Python and SQL skills.
  • Built and shipped at least one LLM-powered application or agent used by real users, using tool calling, retrieval, structured outputs, and evaluation.
  • Hands-on Databricks experience with Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and Workflows, or comparable lakehouse experience; alternatively, deep data engineering experience sufficient to ramp up quickly.
  • Experience integrating SaaS and internal systems through REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth.
  • Tests and instruments work, considers cost, and can judge when a workflow is ready to be owned by someone else.
  • Clear communicator with nontechnical stakeholders and comfortable running working sessions with business teams.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot in a modern engineering workflow.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Databricks Mosaic AI (Agent Framework, Model Serving, Vector Search), Genie, Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines, Lakebase, or Databricks Apps.
  • Experience building MCP servers or working with the Claude Developer Platform or Agent SDK.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as n8n.
  • Experience integrating with HubSpot, Zendesk, NetSuite, or Jira.
  • Experience in ad tech, performance marketing, or another environment handling regulated consumer data.

Responsibilities

  • Ship production agents and automated workflows from a prioritized, business-validated backlog, owning each from business scoping through build, deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff.
  • Build the data foundation in Databricks using Unity Catalog tables and views, Lakeflow pipelines, Lakeflow Connect ingestion, and Genie spaces.
  • Bring data from ad-serving and partner platforms, CRM, support desk, and finance systems into a trusted, unified location.
  • Work with Data Science to create evaluation sets and track accuracy, drift, cost, and latency; add audit fields and failure alerts to production workflows.
  • Integrate Fluent systems using APIs, webhooks, MCP servers, and orchestration tools such as Databricks Workflows, n8n, and GitHub Actions.
  • Replace brittle point-to-point automations with maintained, observable workflows.
  • Partner with Core Engineering to expose platform data and actions as APIs for agents and business teams.
  • Build reusable Claude skills, MCP connectors, prompt and evaluation libraries, and playbooks.
  • Handle consumer data according to Fluent’s privacy and compliance standards, use approved AI tools, and coordinate credentials and access with IT and Security.
  • Demo work weekly, document it in Confluence, and share learnings through brown bags and tech talks.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot review as part of the engineering workflow.
