About The Position

Fluent is hiring its first dedicated AI Engineer to build production AI agents and automated workflows for its advertising network. The role sits in Core Engineering and works closely with Data Engineering, Data Science, and Solution Architecture. The engineer will turn business needs into reliable systems on Fluent’s Databricks lakehouse, with trusted data and dependable actions at the center of the work. The role owns workflows from business scoping through development, deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff. It also builds and maintains data foundations, integrations, evaluation and observability practices, and reusable components that can support other builders across Fluent. The position involves regular collaboration with business teams, weekly demos, documentation, and sharing knowledge through brown bags and tech talks. Consumer data must be handled according to Fluent’s privacy and compliance standards, using approved AI tools and coordinating with IT and Security on credentials and access. The role is fully remote in the United States, with occasional travel to Fluent’s New York headquarters. Success is defined by shipping an end-to-end workflow with measurable business results in the first 90 days, then delivering multiple production workflows and reusable components within six months.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software or data engineering experience.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills.
  • Experience building and shipping at least one LLM-powered application or agent used by real users, using tool calling, retrieval, structured outputs, and evaluation.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Workflows) or a comparable lakehouse, or sufficient data engineering experience to ramp up quickly.
  • Experience integrating SaaS and internal systems through REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth.
  • Ability to test and instrument work, manage cost, and determine when a workflow is ready for handoff.
  • Clear communication with nontechnical colleagues and comfort facilitating working sessions with business teams.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot in a modern engineering workflow.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Databricks Mosaic AI (Agent Framework, Model Serving, Vector Search), Genie, Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines, Lakebase, or Databricks Apps.
  • Experience building MCP servers or working with the Claude Developer Platform or Agent SDK.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as n8n.
  • Experience integrating with HubSpot, Zendesk, NetSuite, or Jira.
  • Experience in ad tech, performance marketing, or another environment handling regulated consumer data.

Responsibilities

  • Ship production agents and automated workflows from a prioritized, business-validated backlog.
  • Own each workflow from business scoping through build, deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff.
  • Build data foundations in Databricks, including Unity Catalog tables and views, Lakeflow pipelines, Lakeflow Connect ingestion, and Genie spaces.
  • Bring data from ad-serving and partner platforms, CRM, support desk, and finance systems into a trusted shared environment.
  • Work with Data Science to measure agent quality through evaluation sets, accuracy and drift tracking, cost and latency instrumentation, audit fields, and failure alerts.
  • Integrate Fluent systems through APIs, webhooks, MCP servers, and orchestration tools, replacing brittle point-to-point automations with maintained, observable workflows.
  • Partner with Core Engineering to expose platform data and actions as APIs for agents and business teams.
  • Build reusable Claude skills, MCP connectors, prompt and evaluation libraries, and playbooks.
  • Handle consumer data in accordance with privacy and compliance standards, use approved AI tools, and coordinate with IT and Security on credentials and access.
  • Demo work weekly, document it in Confluence, and share knowledge in brown bags and tech talks.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot review as part of the normal workflow.
