Staff Software Engineer, Vanta for Government
About The Position
As a Staff Software Engineer on Vanta’s Government team, you will set the technical foundation for the company’s expansion into the public sector. You will design systems, patterns, and architecture for compliance programs serving government vendors, federal agencies, and State, Local, and Education (SLED) organizations. The team is developing Vanta’s AI-powered platform to help these organizations manage frameworks such as FedRAMP, CMMC, and NIST, strengthen their security posture, and support mission-critical work. Working directly with early design partners, you will shape new capabilities and serve as the team’s most senior engineer during a critical build phase. You will make architectural decisions, establish engineering patterns, and lead multi-quarter initiatives that define how Vanta serves government customers at scale. You will also mentor engineers and collaborate across engineering, product, and go-to-market teams.
Requirements
- 10+ years of deep backend engineering experience.
- Track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives in fast-paced, product-focused environments.
- Strong systems thinking and platform architecture skills, including designing for reuse, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- Experience in highly regulated industries such as fintech or healthcare.
- Comfort operating in early-stage, 0-to-1 environments where requirements evolve and technical decisions have significant business consequences.
- Strong product mindset, ability to prioritize against deadlines, and ability to balance technical rigor with delivery velocity.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, including influencing technical direction and bridging technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to mentor and develop engineers and raise team-wide technical quality.
- Authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
- Willingness to use AI responsibly to improve efficiency and impact, with curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Responsibilities
- Own technical strategy and architecture for Vanta’s government product line, designing systems for federal agencies, government vendors, and SLED organizations.
- Lead the design and development of new product capabilities, including core compliance workflow features, and validate and iterate on them with early design partners.
- Define reusable abstractions and platform patterns to prevent technical debt as the government product scales.
- Partner with adjacent engineering teams on shared infrastructure and tagging systems for government-specific compliance workflows.
- Drive multi-quarter technical initiatives across engineering, product, and go-to-market, translating evolving requirements into scalable solutions.
- Mentor mid-level and senior engineers through code review, engineering practice-setting, and technical decision-making.
