About The Position

In Tandem is hiring a hands-on Staff+ Software Engineer to identify and build impactful solutions across its family-focused products and platform. This evergreen role’s specific team and scope will be shaped around the candidate’s strengths and the organization’s most important opportunities. The engineer will work in an evolving environment where some projects begin without a brief, established team, or playbook, taking promising ideas from initial discovery through production and user feedback. The role combines technical leadership with product judgment and practical AI-assisted development. The engineer will identify user and market needs, validate ideas, build focused solutions, and use evidence to decide whether to improve, expand, or stop the work. They will help raise engineering pace and quality through effective AI-enabled workflows, make sound technical decisions amid uncertainty, and collaborate across product, APIs, web, mobile, and infrastructure. They will also share knowledge and help others adopt approaches that prove effective.

Requirements

  • Staff-level impact as a hands-on engineer, including shaping technical direction, building important systems, and helping others deliver stronger work.
  • An owner's mindset, with experience starting something in a low-structure environment and staying with it through early user adoption or a decision that it would not succeed.
  • Ability to move from an uncertain problem to a useful result, test premises with prototypes, and recognize when stronger engineering is needed for production.
  • Product judgment and curiosity about users and markets, including the ability to explain why a problem mattered, how priorities were chosen with others, and what changed for users or the business.
  • Practical fluency with AI-assisted development, including using models or agents to build real software or workflows and explaining their benefits, limitations, and verification.
  • Strong judgment about architecture, quality, security, and user experience.
  • Depth in at least one engineering area, with the fundamentals and curiosity to work effectively across the stack.
  • Low ego, high integrity, and a habit of making reasoning visible so others can learn from and improve it.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience taking work from an uncertain opportunity to a useful result, including finding initial users and making progress when support or structure was unavailable.
  • Experience validating a user or market need and choosing a direction with partners.
  • Experience taking a prototype or agent-based workflow into production with evaluation, tests, observability, and clear human review points.
  • Experience removing recurring delivery bottlenecks or testing an emerging product opportunity with a small build.
  • Experience building in a product company, small team, open source, or another nontraditional setting; evidence of impact matters more than a particular employer or tool list.
  • A clearly explained experiment that failed and the judgment learned from it.

Responsibilities

  • Identify worthwhile problems by speaking with users, learning from support and product data, and monitoring market changes; clarify priorities and involve partners as the work develops.
  • Take ideas from zero to one, including starting without established structure, shipping an initial version to real users, seeking traction, and owning outcomes beyond the code.
  • Carry useful work into production by defining success measures, building focused solutions, learning from real use, and using evidence to improve, expand, or stop the work.
  • Improve engineering pace and quality by identifying AI-enabled workflows and building tools, context, checks, and feedback loops that help engineers use them confidently.
  • Make technical and product decisions when requirements are incomplete; communicate reasoning and bring consequential tradeoffs to relevant partners.
  • Choose appropriately between prototyping and durable architecture, and verify that systems are correct, safe, and useful.
  • Work across product and engineering boundaries, applying depth in a core platform and range across APIs, web, mobile, and infrastructure to help features succeed end to end.
  • Share working examples, explain tradeoffs, invite criticism, and help teams adopt effective practices.

Benefits

  • Medical coverage: In Tandem pays 100% of the employee premium and 99% of premiums for additional family members.
  • 401(k) with up to a 4% match and immediate vesting.
  • Paid leave for all new parents.
