Staff Software Engineer (Applications), Full Stack

Edwards Lifesciences•Irvine, CA
•$121,000 - $171,000•Onsite

About The Position

At Edwards Lifesciences, the Implantable Heart Failure Management (IHFM) AI, Product and Platforms organization designs and builds software and data products used by clinicians and patients. The Staff Software Engineer (Applications), Full Stack sets web application architecture across the front end, the BFF, and supporting services; drives modernization at scale; and builds patterns and tooling adopted by multiple teams. The position is based in Irvine, California, with in-person collaboration across cross-functional teams. The role establishes architecture and reference implementations for web applications and their use of Platform APIs, including design systems, API contracts, navigation, feature flags, and modularization. It leads Angular-to-React and BFF-to-Platform API migrations, helps determine monorepo and rendering strategies, and partners with Platform, DevOps, and Mobile teams on APIs, cloud deployment, and cross-surface architecture. It also sets engineering standards, helps scale design-control outputs and traceability, and mentors engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field plus 8 years of experience, or a master’s degree plus 6 years of experience.
  • Recognized depth in web application architecture and hands-on fluency with React, Angular, Platform API and gateway consumption using REST and GraphQL, and at least one server-side language, plus working knowledge of mobile client architecture.
  • Track record of setting technical standards adopted across multiple teams.
  • Experience leading a large-scale frontend or API modernization, such as Angular to React or BFF to Platform APIs.
  • Experience designing and operating cloud-deployed applications at scale, including containers, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
  • Ability to embed quality and traceability into a secure software development lifecycle (SSDLC), including CI/CD and automated testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in medical device software (SaMD) or other regulated classes of device software under IEC 62304, ISO 13485, IEC 62366-1, and FDA design controls.
  • Experience with experimentation, feature flag, and modular build infrastructure.
  • Experience across UI framework and design system ecosystems such as Material UI, Chakra UI, Radix UI, Tailwind UI, shadcn/ui, IBM Carbon, or Ant Design.
  • Experience with EMR/EHR integration (HL7, FHIR, IHE) and clinical workflows.
  • Experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes) and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK).

Responsibilities

  • Set web application architecture across the front end and consumption of Platform APIs, including design system implementation, API contract patterns, navigation, feature flags, and modularization; build reference implementations.
  • Drive Angular-to-React and BFF-to-Platform API migrations across teams, progressively retire the BFF layer, and make monorepo and rendering strategy decisions backed by working prototypes.
  • Partner with Platform engineers on API and gateway design; contribute server-side code to Platform-owned services when it unblocks client work; design third-party and EMR/EHR integrations; and bring client constraints into product roadmap discussions.
  • Set cloud deployment patterns for web applications, including containers, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code, in partnership with Platform and DevOps; build reference pipelines for teams to adopt.
  • Partner with the Mobile track on shared API contracts, design system parity, and cross-surface architecture.
  • Set engineering standards across the web application ecosystem for code quality, accessibility implementation, performance budgets, API design, and test strategy.
  • Shape how application design outputs, verification evidence, and traceability are produced across teams, in partnership with Software Systems and Process Development.
  • Mentor P3 engineers, set the hiring bar at this level, and increase team output through architecture and tooling.
