Staff+ Software Engineer, Platform Safety

Anthropic•San Francisco, CA
•$405,000 - $485,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Anthropic’s Platform Safety team builds infrastructure that determines who can access its most capable models and what capabilities they can use across Anthropic products. The platform supports identity and business verification, trusted access programs, and the core services that grant, hold, and enforce model access. Existing systems support the Cyber Verification Program, including Project Glasswing, and the Life Sciences Verification Program, with additional use cases in development. The Staff+ Software Engineer will help set the technical direction as the platform scales. The work includes making access rules configurable rather than code-driven, making verification reusable, and creating a consistent customer experience across product surfaces. The engineer will partner with safeguards, product, design, and research teams to translate safety policy into usable, enforceable systems, and will take new initiatives from idea through delivery. The role also shapes architecture through written proposals and design reviews, mentors engineers, shares on-call responsibilities, leads incident response, and supports emerging programs. Anthropic expects staff to work from an office at least 25% of the time under its current hybrid policy, though some roles may require more.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of practical experience as a backend or platform engineer, ideally at tech lead level or equivalent.
  • Comfort working across the stack when needed.
  • Strong product sense and ability to work closely with cross-functional partners, including non-engineers, to shape and execute strategy in new domains.
  • Regular use of AI tools in designing, building, and reviewing software.
  • Experience designing and operating production distributed systems on a critical path where correctness, latency, and availability matter.
  • Ownership of work from design through build, deployment, operations, and iteration.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, make sound technical decisions independently, and set technical direction adopted by other engineers and teams.
  • Experience operating in 0-to-1 and more mature settings is ideal.
  • Interest in building robust, scalable systems that other engineers and businesses value.
  • Care about the societal impacts of the work and Anthropic’s mission to build safe, beneficial AI.
  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with identity, access control, or authorization systems at scale.
  • Experience with fraud, risk, trust and safety, or KYC/KYB systems, including working with verification vendors.
  • Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments, including handling sensitive personal data.
  • Experience integrating with cloud platforms or partner ecosystems such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate systems that determine access to Anthropic’s most capable models.
  • Build a platform that enables teams to launch and operate trusted access programs, moving access rules from code into data.
  • Develop reusable identity and business verification (KYC/KYB) services, including vendor integrations, sensitive-data protection, regional expansion, and fair customer review and appeal paths.
  • Evolve core access-decision services, including services that grant and hold access and the customer and user identity models they rely on.
  • Maintain high availability and consistency across Anthropic products and cloud platforms.
  • Shape architecture through written proposals and review key designs.
  • Mentor engineers on a growing team.
  • Share on-call responsibilities, lead incident response, and support emerging programs.
  • Partner with safeguards, product, design, and research teams to translate safety policy into usable and enforceable systems.
  • Take new 0-to-1 efforts from idea through delivery.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
