Staff+ Software Engineer, Platform Safety

About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Staff+ Software Engineer for Platform Safety, which builds infrastructure that determines who can access its most capable models and which capabilities they can use across Claude products. The platform supports identity and business verification, trusted access programs, and core services that grant, hold, and enforce model access. These systems power programs including the Cyber Verification Program, Project Glasswing, and the Life Sciences Verification Program. The engineer will help set technical direction as adoption grows, making access configurable rather than code-driven, verification reusable, and customer experiences consistent across product surfaces. The role partners with safeguards, product, design, and research to turn safety policy into usable, enforceable systems, and takes new initiatives from idea through delivery. The position involves designing, building, and operating access systems and a platform for teams to launch trusted access programs. It includes developing reusable KYC/KYB services, integrating verification vendors, protecting sensitive personal data, expanding regional coverage, and providing fair review and appeal paths. The engineer will evolve core access-decision services and identity models, maintain high availability and consistency across Anthropic products and cloud platforms, shape architecture through written proposals and design reviews, mentor engineers, share on-call duties, lead incident response, and support emerging programs. The role requires at least 8 years of practical backend or platform engineering experience. A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is required, in a field relevant to the role. The position follows a hybrid policy: staff are currently expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more. Preference is given to candidates based in NY, SEA, SF, or the Bay Area. The annual salary range is $405,000–$485,000 USD. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with no deadline.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of practical experience as a backend or platform engineer, ideally at tech lead level or equivalent.
  • Comfort working across the stack when the problem calls for it.
  • Strong product sense and ability to work with cross-functional partners, including non-engineers, to shape and execute strategy in new domains.
  • Regular use of AI tools to design, build, and review software.
  • Experience designing and operating production distributed systems on a critical path where correctness, latency, and availability matter.
  • Ownership of work from design through build, deployment, operations, and iteration.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, make sound technical decisions independently, and set technical direction adopted by other engineers and teams.
  • Ability to build robust, scalable systems that engineers and businesses can use effectively.
  • Care about the societal impacts of the work and Anthropic's mission to build safe, beneficial AI.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Relevant field of study, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fraud, risk, trust and safety, or KYC/KYB systems, including work with verification vendors.
  • Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments, including handling sensitive personal data.
  • Experience integrating with cloud platforms or partner ecosystems such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.
  • Experience in both 0-to-1 and more mature settings.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate systems that determine access to Anthropic's most capable models.
  • Build a platform that enables teams to launch and operate trusted access programs, moving access rules from code into data.
  • Develop identity and business verification (KYC/KYB) as a reusable service, integrating verification vendors, protecting sensitive personal data, expanding into new regions, and building review and appeal paths.
  • Evolve core services that grant and hold access, along with the customer and user identity models they rely on.
  • Maintain high availability and consistency across Anthropic products and cloud platforms.
  • Shape architecture through written proposals and review key designs.
  • Mentor engineers on a growing team.
  • Share on-call duties, lead incident response, and support emerging programs.

  • Take new initiatives from idea through delivery.
