About The Position

Gusto is seeking a full-stack software engineer to join the Benefits Renewals team. This team is responsible for the workflows that guide employers and employees through the annual benefits renewal process, ensuring compliance and retention of suitable coverage. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be involved in the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and design to launch and ongoing iteration. This includes writing frontend code, developing backend APIs, influencing product strategy, and taking ownership of post-launch improvements. The role offers the opportunity to combine technical expertise with a significant impact on the livelihoods of millions of Gusto users.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience.
  • Proven experience owning multi-quarter projects that address complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity, including scoping, sequencing, and unblocking without pre-defined problem breakdowns; ability to align multiple stakeholders and work with multiple teams.
  • Experience implementing A/B tests or experimentation.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities.
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams.
  • Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact.
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code.
  • Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails.
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test products within the Benefits domain.
  • Enhance the user experience for both external and internal customers during the benefits renewal process.
  • Automate complex manual processes in health insurance to minimize errors and save time.
  • Mentor other engineers in tackling complex technical challenges within intricate domains and at a large scale.
  • Contribute to scaling one of the world's largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to identify customer pain points, develop solutions, and execute prototyping, iteration, and daily launches.
  • Build products that customers find valuable.
