About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Staff Software Engineer in San Jose, CA. The role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining ETL pipelines for all onboarded data sources, calculating key metrics, monitoring ETL jobs, detecting and resolving job failures, investigating anomalies, performing root-cause analysis, developing new features for scalability, and collaborating with engineering and product teams to enhance monitoring capabilities. Additionally, the role includes finding talent and mentoring junior staff. Partial telecommuting is permitted from within a commutable distance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field plus eight years of progressively responsible experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Experience designing and developing large-scale software applications leveraging big data technologies
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms
  • Experience with Python, Java, or Scala
  • Experience with version control systems (Git) and CI/CD practices
  • Experience with Linux environments, and performing troubleshooting and writing automation scripts
  • Experience working in agile development environments
  • Experience in performance tuning of big data solutions
  • Experience in building GenAI based solutions

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain ETL pipelines for all onboarded data sources, adhering to required frequencies (daily, weekly, etc.).
  • Calculate key metrics such as percentiles, averages, missing rates, score bands, and distributions to quantify system efficiencies, ensure the accuracy of these metrics, and see that they are delivered on schedule to facilitate the identification of production issues.
  • Continuously monitor ETL jobs and data processing workflows.
  • Detect, investigate, and resolve job failures in order to maintain data quality and system reliability.
  • Recover failed jobs and coordinate with relevant teams to resolve complex issues.
  • Investigate anomalies such as score shifts, unexpected metric changes, and data-missing issues.
  • Efficiently perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions to restore data integrity.
  • Develop and implement new features to support additional data sources and improve system scalability.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to enhance monitoring capabilities.
  • Find talent and mentor junior staff to become valuable assets to PayPal.
