Staff Software Engineer - Builder Platform

Temporal Technologies
•$169,600 - $278,250

About The Position

Join Temporal’s Builder Platform Team to empower a company of builders with a frictionless, standardized, and governed platform for agents, workflows, and core engineering tools. The team operates Temporal as customer zero, partnering directly with teams across the company to run real work on the platform, measure the productivity it enables, and feed learnings back into Temporal products and open-source frameworks for customers. The Staff Software Engineer owns the strategy, architecture, and operation of the Agent Platform and its supporting AI and developer infrastructure. The role builds and operates agents and workflows for engineering and business work, establishes practices and adoption pathways, and measures platform usage, reliability, cost, and productivity impact. It also leads the customer-zero feedback loop with product leadership and contributes to an open-source reference architecture. The role includes mentoring engineers, collaborating across Engineering, Product, Sales, and G&A, and participating in an on-call rotation while improving reliability and reducing operational burden.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of leading the design, delivery, and operation of production-quality internal platforms or developer tooling.
  • Experience leveraging modern agentic coding tools such as Codex and Claude Code, including defining best practices and driving adoption across teams.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages commonly used at Temporal, such as Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Java, and ability to make pragmatic, high-leverage technical decisions.
  • Experience architecting and scaling workflow automation or internal tools, such as CLI tools, services, GitHub automation, or cloud automation, used across teams or the organization.
  • Strong judgment about when to standardize versus enable flexibility, and how to remove friction without compromising reliability, security, or long-term maintainability.
  • Comfort leading cross-functional collaboration, including partnering with non-traditional developers and translating ambiguous needs into scalable, well-adopted solutions.
  • Ability to combine data and qualitative feedback to define success metrics, prioritize effectively, and measure impact.
  • Clear written communication, including documentation that enables self-service and scales knowledge across teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building internal agents and operating an agent platform.
  • Experience building and operating Temporal applications.

Responsibilities

  • Own the strategy, architecture, and operation of the Agent Platform for deploying, running, evaluating, governing, and improving agents and agentic workflows.
  • Architect AI infrastructure for agents, including LLM and MCP gateways with guardrails, fallback, usage and cost controls, and model rollout policies.
  • Design, build, and operate agents and workflows that carry engineering work from issue to production and business work from trigger to outcome, scaling them across teams and use cases.
  • Lead the development and evolution of Developer Infrastructure, including Source Control and CI, and developer tools that improve builder flow and reduce friction.
  • Partner with stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Sales, and G&A to identify opportunities where AI can accelerate work and improve outcomes.
  • Define agent and agentic-tooling best practices, create enablement materials and paved roads, and drive organizational adoption.
  • Establish measurement and feedback loops for usage, reliability, and cost to quantify productivity, inform prioritization, and shape the roadmap.
  • Lead Temporal’s customer-zero work, translate learnings into validated requirements for Temporal Cloud, SDKs, and the Agent Harness, own the feedback loop with product leadership, and drive contributions to an open-source reference architecture.
  • Mentor and support engineers, raising the bar on technical design, execution, and use of agents and agentic tooling.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and drive improvements that reduce operational burden and improve the internal user experience.
