Staff+ Software Engineer, Deployment

Anthropic•San Francisco, NY

About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Staff+ Software Engineer for its Infrastructure organization to build and operate the systems that move software changes into production. The team’s mission is to give every team at Anthropic a fast, safe, and predictable path from change to production. Its platform includes deployment pipelines, staged rollouts, health-gated promotion and rollback, runtime configuration, feature flags, and systems for delivering code and artifacts across a large fleet. The engineer will own a meaningful part of this platform end to end, from design through production operations, and help shape how quickly and safely Anthropic ships. The role involves setting technical direction for major areas of the deployment platform, building safety into delivery workflows, extending support to additional workload types and runtimes, and partnering with teams across Anthropic to onboard their workloads. The engineer will also work with Security on secure-by-default production pathways and participate in on-call and incident response. The role is hybrid: staff are currently expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time, with some roles potentially requiring more.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in at least one backend or systems programming language, such as Rust, Go, C++, or Java.
  • Experience leading the design, building, and operation of distributed systems or infrastructure in production, including providing technical direction across teams.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and containerized workloads, such as Kubernetes on AWS or GCP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • At least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building deployment, release, or change management systems at large scale.
  • Experience with production on-call and incident response.
  • Experience with Rust in production.
  • Experience with progressive delivery and GitOps tooling, such as Argo CD or Argo Rollouts.
  • Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including controllers and operators.
  • Experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code systems at scale, including state management and locking.
  • Experience building feature flag, experimentation, or dynamic configuration systems.
  • Experience with artifact or package distribution, such as OCI registries, Nix, or content-addressed storage.
  • Experience with software supply chain security, such as signed build provenance.
  • Experience building high-throughput workflow engines or control planes backed by relational databases.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms and leading adoption across many teams.
  • Experience using AI agents in engineering work or building systems that agents operate.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for major parts of the deployment platform and own them end to end, including design, implementation, and operations.
  • Build rollout safety features, including progressive delivery, health-gated promotion, automatic pause and rollback, and self-managed deploy controls.
  • Design APIs and abstractions that work for both engineers and AI agents.
  • Extend the platform to new workload types and runtimes, including Kubernetes, serverless, and edge platforms.
  • Build and operate runtime configuration and feature flag systems with validation, gradual rollout, and fast rollback.
  • Build infrastructure-as-code workflows that teams can use for safe, routine changes.
  • Scale artifact distribution so code and configuration reach machines quickly and efficiently.
  • Partner with Security to make the path to production secure by default, with verifiable builds, least-privilege access, and auditable changes.
  • Work with teams across Anthropic to understand deployment needs and bring their workloads onto the platform.
  • Participate in on-call and incident response, and turn lessons learned into guardrails that prevent recurring problems.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaboration.
