About The Position

Maple is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, AI to own and ship AI-powered healthcare experiences. The role sits within Product Engineering and partners with Product, Design, Platform, Security, Privacy, Legal, and clinical experts to take ambiguous patient and provider problems from discovery through production. It is a hands-on senior individual-contributor position requiring substantial production coding, design, review, and operational ownership, alongside technical leadership that helps Maple build and scale AI capabilities reliably, safely, observably, and cost-effectively. The engineer will own a high-impact product area and help shape AI practices across the wider engineering organization. The role involves building and operating production AI systems, establishing evaluation and monitoring approaches, and balancing user experience, clinical quality, privacy, security, reliability, latency, and cost. The position is hybrid at Maple’s Toronto office. The stated start date is December 2026.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience building and operating production software, with Staff-level scope or equivalent technical leadership.
  • Recent hands-on experience shipping AI- or LLM-powered product features as part of a product engineering team.
  • Experience taking ambiguous product problems through technical discovery, architecture, implementation, launch, and iteration.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and pragmatic decision-making across scalability, reliability, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Hands-on coding experience in a modern production language and ability to work across AI services and product systems.
  • Experience designing APIs, data flows, services, integrations, or distributed systems operating in production.
  • A product mindset focused on users, outcomes, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction across teams without formal authority.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and improving how teams design, build, test, and operate software.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical partners.

Responsibilities

  • Own an AI product area from problem discovery and technical design through implementation, launch, monitoring, and iteration.
  • Partner with Product and Design to understand user needs, identify valuable uses for AI, and turn ambiguous problems into useful experiences.
  • Design and build production AI systems using LLMs, agents, retrieval, tool calling, workflow orchestration, and human-in-the-loop patterns where appropriate.
  • Write production code, review designs and pull requests, debug difficult issues, and participate in operational ownership after launch.
  • Establish practical evaluation and monitoring approaches to measure product quality, safety, reliability, latency, and cost.
  • Work with Platform Engineering on shared services, model providers, infrastructure, and ownership boundaries.
  • Help teams make trade-offs across user experience, clinical quality, privacy, security, reliability, and AI unit economics.
  • Turn successful product implementations into reusable patterns for other engineering squads.
  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar through collaboration, design reviews, documentation, and example-setting.
  • Partner with Security, Privacy, Legal, and Clinical stakeholders on responsible handling of PHI and safe deployment of AI capabilities.
  • Communicate technical decisions and product trade-offs clearly to engineers, product leaders, executives, and cross-functional partners.
  • Ship or materially advance an AI capability, establish an evaluation and monitoring baseline, and build cross-functional relationships during the first 90 days.
  • Demonstrate measurable product or workflow impact and improve quality, safety, reliability, latency, and cost through production learning over the first 12–18 months.
  • Help multiple squads ship AI features that meet Maple’s standards and establish reusable approaches to evaluation, agent execution, monitoring, and operational readiness.

Benefits

  • Maple healthcare access for the employee and family, including 24/7 general practitioners, pediatrics, and mental health therapy, with care starting on day one.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and life insurance coverage.
  • Health spending account.
  • Annual flexible benefits budget for professional development, wellness expenses, or a one-time boost to retirement savings.
  • 10 dedicated health days for rest, medical appointments, or caregiving.
  • Destination days allowing work internationally in eligible countries for up to five days per year.
  • Group retirement savings plan.
  • Four weeks of vacation.
