Qualcomm•San Diego, CA
•$162,000 - $243,000

About The Position

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, AI Software Core, in its Engineering Group’s Machine Learning Engineering organization. The role focuses on extending machine-learning training and runtime frameworks and model-efficiency tools, developing optimized software for AI models deployed on hardware, and creating machine-learning techniques and solutions for products and customers. The engineer collaborates with hardware teams on co-designed inference or training solutions and contributes to prototypes and roadmaps for complex products. The position works independently with minimal supervision and provides guidance to other team members. It involves significant decisions that can affect work beyond the immediate group, complex communication and influence, and planning and prioritization where tasks do not have defined steps. The role has moderate influence over organizational decisions and may be consulted by senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field and 4 or more years of relevant hardware engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, or other work experience; OR a master’s degree in one of these fields and 3 or more years of relevant experience; OR a Ph.D. in one of these fields and 2 or more years of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 5 or more years of experience with machine-learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Caffe, Caffe2, PyTorch, or Keras.
  • 5 or more years of experience in embedded-system development and optimization applied to a machine-learning problem domain such as NLP or multimedia.
  • 5 or more years of experience with one or more programming languages suitable for machine learning, such as Python, R, C, or C++.
  • 5 or more years of experience using statistics and probability, such as conditional probability and Bayes’ rule.
  • 3 or more years of experience working in a large matrixed organization.
  • 2 or more years of experience with low-level interactions between operating systems such as Linux, Android, or QNX and hardware.
  • 1 or more year in a technical leadership role, with or without direct reports; this qualification applies only to positions with direct reports.
  • 1 or more year of work experience in a role requiring interaction with senior leadership, such as Director level and above.

Responsibilities

  • Extend machine-learning training or runtime frameworks and model-efficiency software tools with new features and optimizations.
  • Model, architect, and develop machine-learning hardware, co-designed with machine-learning software, for inference or training solutions.
  • Develop optimized software, such as machine-learning kernels, compiler tools, and model-efficiency tools, to enable AI models to use specific hardware features.
  • Collaborate with hardware teams on joint design and development.
  • Develop and apply machine-learning techniques in products and AI solutions to enable customers to do the same.
  • Develop, adapt, or prototype novel machine-learning solutions aligned with proposals or roadmaps for complex products and working features.
  • Oversee and conduct experiments to train and evaluate machine-learning models and/or software.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to other team members.

Benefits

  • Competitive annual discretionary bonus program.
  • Opportunity for annual RSU grants; employees on sales-incentive plans are not eligible for the annual bonus.
