Staff Psychiatrist - Detention Booking
About The Position
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is seeking a Staff Psychiatrist for its Detention Booking Services at the Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex in San Jose, CA. This role involves providing initial psychiatric evaluations for arrested individuals, initiating or continuing treatment, and admitting patients to the inpatient unit if necessary. The psychiatrist will work within a correctional facility using a direct supervision model, with an average caseload of 7-14 cases per shift. In situations where the acute inpatient unit is understaffed, the booking psychiatrist may assist with inpatient coverage for up to 10 hours. Access to a clinical social worker is available for triaging less acute patients. The position operates on 16-hour shifts daily, from 7 AM to 11 PM PT.
Requirements
- Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Board certification or eligibility in Psychiatry.
- Valid California medical license.
- Experience in psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
- Ability to work in a correctional environment.
- Experience with acute psychiatric cases.

- Familiarity with correctional healthcare systems.
Responsibilities
- Provide initial psychiatric evaluation for arrested patients.
