About The Position

Honeycomb is hiring a Staff Product Manager to lead product work for its Canvas and Agentic AI teams, which are building an AI-powered investigation experience. Canvas enables engineers to query, visualize, and understand production systems using natural language. The teams are developing Skills, repeatable executable workflows that encode domain expertise; Auto-Investigations, agent-driven investigations that can begin before a human is paged; and a redesigned, interactive, collaborative Canvas experience. The role owns the roadmap for how AI appears across Honeycomb, from the product UI to its MCP server. Working closely with engineering and design leads, the Director of AI Strategy, research and development teams, and customer-facing teams, the Staff Product Manager will connect customer needs and technical capabilities while shipping production features in a rapidly evolving product area. The role also contributes to Honeycomb’s broader AI product strategy: evaluating customer value and emerging technologies, researching how customers use AI in engineering, enabling teams across the product portfolio to make effective use of AI, and articulating Honeycomb’s perspective on AI observability internally and externally. The position calls for strong product judgment, customer empathy, technical credibility, clear communication, and comfort operating amid ambiguity.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of product management experience, including at least 1 year shipping AI/ML-powered products.
  • Track record of taking AI features from concept to customer impact, including experience with approaches that did not work.
  • Deep understanding of how engineering teams build, deploy, and operate AI systems.
  • Familiarity with current AI/ML techniques and sound judgment about when they are applicable.
  • Ability to synthesize research, customer feedback, and technical trends into coherent strategy.
  • Comfort operating amid ambiguity and making decisions without perfect information.
  • Strong pattern recognition across customer conversations, including the ability to identify needs customers have not clearly articulated.
  • Strong judgment about when to decline or defer an exciting technology or product opportunity.
  • Sufficient technical depth to earn respect from engineers and architects.
  • Curiosity about technical systems and humility about the limits of one’s knowledge.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs among AI approaches, including RAG, fine-tuning, and model selection.
  • Understanding of observability principles and their importance in production systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex ideas to varied audiences.
  • Ability to influence across product, engineering, and go-to-market teams without authority.
  • Comfort presenting to customers, executives, and technical audiences.
  • Collaborative approach that elevates others’ work rather than centralizing control.
  • Ability to stay current in fast-moving domains and an intellectual-humility-driven learning orientation.
  • Excitement about applying AI technology to real customer problems and comfort with the pace of change in AI.

Responsibilities

  • Own the roadmap for the Canvas and Agentic AI teams and how AI appears in Honeycomb’s product, from the UI to the MCP server.
  • Define AI product strategy in service of Honeycomb’s vision.
  • Synthesize AI trends, customer needs, and technical capabilities into strategic recommendations.
  • Help the product organization distinguish genuine customer value from AI hype and make informed investment decisions about AI technologies and approaches.
  • Identify emerging observability challenges associated with AI adoption, such as LLM drift, prompt regression, and low-context generated code.
  • Research how customers are adopting AI in engineering workflows and identify patterns that signal future market needs.
  • Stay current with AI/ML developments, including RAG, fine-tuning, and agentic systems, and translate their implications for observability.
  • Engage with technical communities, researchers, and early adopters to identify emerging trends.
  • Partner with product teams to identify high-value AI opportunities and advise on approaches, trade-offs, and best practices without centralizing decisions.
  • Help teams understand how their work fits into the broader AI strategy and how to use shared capabilities.
  • Synthesize cross-portfolio learnings and share what is and is not working.
  • Articulate Honeycomb’s point of view on AI observability internally and externally, and help customers understand how observability needs evolve as they adopt AI.
  • Contribute to thought leadership through writing, speaking, and community engagement.
  • Build credibility with technical audiences by clearly communicating how Honeycomb uses AI.
  • Work in close partnership with engineering and design leads, the Director of AI Strategy, research and development teams, and customer-facing teams.
