Staff/Principal AI Scientist - Virtual Tissue

Absci
•$238,000 - $375,000•Remote

About The Position

Absci is seeking an expert Staff/Principal AI Scientist to advance and deploy virtual tissue models. The role applies deep learning and systems biology to develop innovative approaches for discovering therapeutic targets. Absci’s computational teams develop and validate software platforms for disease biology, target discovery, and antibody design, which are deployed in partnership with disease biologists, protein engineers, screening scientists, and the broader Drug Creation team to support the therapeutic pipeline. The scientist will develop and deploy machine-learning models and data strategies for predicting the effects of potential therapeutic interventions, and collaborate across disciplines to define and address research problems. The role includes iterative in silico and in vitro validation, communicating results to diverse audiences, publishing impactful research, and mentoring other scientists and engineers. The position is remote, with the option to work onsite at the New York City office or Vancouver, Washington headquarters for those within commuting distance.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Computational Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related field.
  • At least 6 years of experience for Staff level or 8 years for Principal level.
  • Expertise in deep learning and a strong background in several of the following: biological world models, mathematical biology, systems biology, disease biology, computational biology/multi-omics, or experiment design and/or handling intra- and intercellular perturbation datasets.
  • Fluency in Python and PyTorch.
  • Expertise in large-scale model architecture design and training.
  • Mastery of proper scoring rules, validation metrics for highly imbalanced biological datasets, and active learning paradigms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an ambitious, fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Experience presenting complex technical work to diverse audiences.
  • Strong publication record in respected, high-impact journals and conferences.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, adapt, and deploy deep learning models that predict the intra- and intercellular signaling effects of potential therapeutic interventions.
  • Develop data-sourcing strategies to train and validate virtual tissue models.
  • Collaborate with Disease Biologists, Structural Biologists, Computational Biologists, and Wet Lab scientists to define and address problem spaces within specific indications.
  • Develop in silico and in vitro validation approaches to iteratively improve design and evaluation methodologies.
  • Communicate and present experimental results accessibly to audiences with diverse backgrounds, supporting informed decision-making and program progression.
  • Deliver and publish high-impact research advancing Absci’s position in AI-guided antibody therapeutic discovery.
  • Coach and mentor other Scientists and Engineers.
  • Help set the AI team’s research agenda and strategic direction, and communicate research, insights, and strategies across the organization.

Benefits

  • Access to industry-leading compute resources for large-scale model training and deployment.
  • Access to Absci’s Wet Lab to validate modeling methods through design-build-test-learn cycles.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a growing pipeline of clinical-stage assets and see research translated into therapeutic impact.
