About The Position

In this role, the Passive Safety System Design Engineer will have ownership of the passive safety system architecture and design for the next generations of Rivian electric vehicles. This will be a high-visibility role developing high-level requirements and defining new technologies that will function as a cohesive system that meets our homologation needs and elevates the crash safety of our occupants.

Requirements

BS + 10 years or MS + 8 years or PhD + 6 years or equivalent experience in electrical engineering or related field.
5+ years of experience with electrical systems design
Experience with planning, writing, and executing test procedures
Ability to troubleshooting sensors, actuators, and digital signals, and perform root cause analysis
Experience leading multidisciplinary trade studies to conclusion
Familiarity with ISO 26262 or similar functional safety standards (e.g. ARP4754)
Demonstrated strong creative thinking and problem-solving toolbox
Ability to dive deep into electrical first principles and work in fast-paced and challenging environments.
Have a fine eye for detail, yet the ability to ‘zoom out’ and see the big picture

Responsibilities

Architect and develop new features and functions for the Passive Safety System Restraints Control Module (RCM)
Drive new technologies from concept to vehicle-worthy maturity
Interface with Homologation, Functional Safety, and Compliance to understand the system requirements and distill them into technical requirements
Collaborate with HW and SW engineers to develop safety-critical system designs that meet our crash safety goals
Own and document the system architecture
Work with the manufacturing team to ensure the system is manufacturable and traceable
Hands-on design and validation of prototype hardware and maturing the design by characterizing and debugging test vehicles to optimize your design
Evaluate system failure modes, create and drive integration and validation plans, and support the execution of these test plans.
Simplify complex functions and features to their core components using a first principles approach to drive simple and structured requirements and production friendly solution working with broader team
Participate in safety and reliability reviews and contribute to resolving reliability issues for components, subsystems, and assemblies.
Collaborate with reliability engineers to support DFMEA to drive reliable design choices and improve validation test planning
Drive technical decisions and guide the team in the right direction.
