About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. This role involves coordinating pediatric hematology patient care, including outpatient visits, labs, tests, and potential admissions. The Staff Nurse will follow up on test results, provide patient education on hematologic conditions and treatments, and participate in ongoing patient management to facilitate timely discharge in collaboration with unit discharge coordinators. They will also assist with pediatric hematology consults for patients under other specialties, acting as a clinical resource or consultant for inpatient and outpatient staff. The position requires adherence to departmental standards, nursing theory, and safe patient care practices, including universal precautions. Responsibilities also include participating in policy development, evaluating patient teaching effectiveness, revising care plans, and assisting with the orientation and education of new nursing staff. Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required
  • 2 years pediatric or adult hematology oncology experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
  • General computer skills are required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates pediatric hematology patient care including outpatient visits, labs, and necessary tests, and possible admissions
  • Follows up with test results to both patient and physician
  • Provides patient education regarding hematologic conditions and treatments
  • Participate in the ongoing management of the patient to facilitate discharge of patient in a timely manner, in collaboration with unit discharge coordinators
  • Assists with pediatric hematology consults for patients being treated under other specialties by providing patient education and being a resource for staff
  • Acts as a clinical resource or consultant for inpatient and outpatient staff for pediatric hematology patients
  • Utilizes, adheres and supports departmental standards and practice guidelines
  • Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness
  • Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Follows universal precautions
  • Participates in the development of unit, division, department and hospital policies, procedures and protocols
  • Evaluates and documents effectiveness of patient/family teaching. Revises plan of care
  • Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education of nursing personnel, as directed by the Nurse Manager or designee
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations
  • Participates in professional development activities
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Adheres to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality.
