About The Position

The Surgical & Trauma Care Unit at University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse for their Orthopedics, Trauma, and Spine Unit (3RC). This unit provides patient-centered care to individuals with traumatic injuries, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, and post-operative urological and orthopedic procedures. The nursing team emphasizes teamwork, holistic care, and a healthy work environment, offering resources for professional and personal growth. The patient population includes those with traumatic injuries from accidents, multi-system trauma, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, ostomy creation, hernia repair, post-operative urological procedures, urologic oncology, orthopedic reconstructive surgery, and spine surgery.

Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills are required, including proficiency in managing multiple databases including Microsoft Excel.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
  • A resume is required as part of the application process.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient-centered care to patients with traumatic injuries, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, and post-operative urological and orthopedic procedures.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members to achieve the highest possible quality of life for patients.
  • Foster holistic, patient-centered care within a healthy work environment.
  • Manage complex wound management and surgical drains.
  • Provide ostomy creation and management.
  • Treat fistulas.
  • Perform hernia repairs.
  • Manage post-operative urological procedures.
  • Provide care for urologic oncology and reconstructive surgeries.
  • Manage complex catheter and urinary diversion.
  • Provide care for reconstructive joint surgery (hip, knee, shoulder).
  • Provide care for spine surgery patients.
