About The Position

The Surgical & Trauma Care Unit at University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse to join their team. This unit provides patient-centered care for individuals with traumatic injuries, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, ostomy care, and urologic and orthopedic surgical conditions. The nursing team emphasizes teamwork, holistic care, and a healthy work environment, offering resources for professional growth. The unit's patient population includes those with traumatic injuries from events like motor vehicle accidents and falls, multi-system traumatic injuries, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, ostomy creation and management, fistula treatment, hernia repair, post-operative urological procedures, urologic oncology and reconstructive surgeries, complex catheter and urinary diversion management, reconstructive joint surgery, and spine surgery.

Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills are required, including proficiency in managing multiple databases including Microsoft Excel.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.

  • Provide patient-centered care to patients and their families coping with the physiological and psychological aspects of their illness or injury.
  • Combine excellent clinical skills with compassionate care to achieve the highest possible quality of life for patients.
  • Collaborate with the nursing team to foster holistic, patient-centered care.
  • Manage care for patients with traumatic injuries, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, ostomy care, and urologic and orthopedic surgical conditions.
  • Perform post-operative care for urological procedures, urologic oncology and reconstructive surgeries, and complex catheter and urinary diversion management.
  • Provide care for patients undergoing reconstructive joint surgery and spine surgery.
