About The Position

Stormentum is hiring its first mechanical engineer to design hardware that converts, stores, and delivers energy to data centers and microgrids. The role focuses on improving power density, cost, reliability, thermal performance, insulation, and manufacturability in novel power electronics products, and carrying designs from concept through prototype, validation, and scalable production. This is a hands-on, prototype-first role requiring end-to-end ownership in a fast-moving startup. The engineer will lead mechanical development with an external hardware partner and collaborate closely with electrical, magnetics, systems, controls, and manufacturing teams. The work spans mechanical integration, multi-physics simulation, testing, component and system packaging, manufacturing tradeoffs, and production documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of hands-on mechanical design experience in power electronics, energy systems, or industrial high-power hardware, with a record of taking new products from development into production.
  • At least two full product development cycles taking distinct hardware products from concept to market.
  • Hands-on experience packaging high-voltage power electronics at 400 V or above, such as 480 VAC three-phase or 800–1000 VDC systems.
  • Strong first-principles thinking and a record of practical, resourceful solutions to complex mechanical and thermal challenges.
  • Hands-on experience building and testing prototypes, including custom fixtures and test setups.
  • Experience with multi-physics simulation (thermal, CFD, and structural) and cost modeling.
  • Experience managing external engineering partners, suppliers, or contract manufacturers.
  • Broad knowledge of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, stamping, die-casting, dispensing, fastening and joining, and automated assembly; familiarity with PCBAs and their components.
  • Solid mechanical engineering fundamentals, including GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or CATIA, plus ANSYS, STAR-CCM+, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and industry standards for energy and industrial products, and basic electrical and magnetic design principles.
  • Ability to travel for extended on-site testing at outside labs.

Nice To Haves

  • Industrial power hardware experience, such as utility-scale inverters, industrial drives, or battery energy storage power conversion systems.
  • Data center power or thermal hardware experience, such as 480 V server rack power systems, PDUs, or liquid-cooled power conversion.
  • Experience packaging rack-level systems, containerized systems, medium-voltage cabinets, or skids, from tens of kilowatts to megawatt scale.
  • Experience designing to UL 62368-1, UL 1973, or UL 9540, and familiarity with rack standards such as EIA-310 and OCP Open Rack.
  • Early-stage startup experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the mechanical lead with the external hardware development partner by defining requirements, reviewing designs, and managing schedule and quality of deliverables.
  • Support mechanical integration for data center and microgrid electrical distribution systems, power electronics, and mechanical, thermal, and electrical test infrastructure.
  • Develop engineering test plans, prototype builds, and validation strategies from concept through high-volume production; create test setups and run on-site test campaigns at outside labs.
  • Run and optimize thermal, CFD, and structural simulations against performance, thermal, structural, and environmental requirements.
  • Model and design electro-mechanical components, including heat sinks, cold plates and manifolds, high-current busbars and interconnects, insulation systems, magnetic elements, and custom PCBA components.
  • Solve packaging challenges involving air and liquid cooling, high-voltage creepage and clearance, EMI, vibration, enclosure ratings, and structural and seismic requirements.
  • Identify and prioritize mechanical technology improvements that increase power density and voltage capability, reduce cost, and enable automated manufacturing; establish progress metrics and targets.
  • Build cost models and trade studies to guide manufacturing process choices and maintain cost-effectiveness from concept through production.
  • Collaborate with electrical, magnetics, systems, controls, and manufacturing engineers on system architecture and tradeoffs in efficiency, reliability, and deployability.
  • Produce drawing packages, manufacturing instructions, and assembly processes for rapid prototyping and scalable production.
