Staff Hardware Engineer

Persistent Systems•New York, NY
•$189,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Persistent Systems is seeking a Staff Hardware Engineer to design, develop, and prototype electronic assemblies for next-generation radios and upgrades to existing products. The role focuses on battery-powered, high-speed (GHz) digital circuit design and covers the product lifecycle from concept through design verification testing (DVT), as well as direct technical support for manufacturing. The engineer will set design direction across a project or a small set of related projects and serve as a technical resource for others. The position includes architecting hardware subsystems across multiple products, defining system- and circuit-level requirements, designing and analyzing circuits, and guiding PCB layout. The engineer will work with Mechanical Engineering on packaging and thermal constraints, establish hardware and software test environments, develop prototypes, and conduct DVT. The role also involves providing technical leadership for subcontractor-developed projects, resolving complex technical challenges, promoting team standards, partnering across functions on tradeoffs, mentoring engineers, contributing to hiring decisions, and ensuring deliverables meet performance, cost, reliability, and schedule targets. The position provides access to RF and digital laboratory infrastructure, including high-bandwidth oscilloscopes, spectrum and vector network analyzers, thermal chambers, and characterization fixtures, along with in-house manufacturing support. The compensation range is $189,000 to $200,000 per year, based on the selected individual's education and experience. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the role is filled.

  • Demonstrated ownership of a complex, cross-functional hardware project.
  • Strong expertise in a core hardware domain, such as power, high-speed digital, or mixed-signal.
  • Developing track record of technical leadership without formal management authority.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of audio/video encoders, decoders, and interfaces.
  • Exposure to embedded firmware development in Assembly, C, and/or C++.
  • Experience in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and design.
  • Knowledge of the 802.11 standard and system implementation.
  • Familiarity with switching-mode power supply design.
  • Knowledge of military qualification testing.
  • Modeling, simulation, or development in VHDL.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent task management skills.
  • Experience with compliance and certification processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Define system- and circuit-level requirements for next-generation radio products.
  • Design circuits, run analyses and simulations, and produce schematics and bills of materials.
  • Identify components and equipment needed to support product design.
  • Provide PCB layout guidance and work with layout engineers to complete PCB designs.
  • Interface with Mechanical Engineering to meet packaging and thermal constraints.
  • Establish hardware and software test environments and infrastructure.
  • Develop concept prototypes and conduct DVT to verify system performance.
  • Provide technical leadership for projects developed by subcontractors.
  • Ensure deliverables meet performance, cost, reliability, and schedule targets.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing.
  • Architect hardware subsystems spanning multiple products.
  • Promote technical standards and best practices for the hardware team.
  • Resolve complex technical challenges across projects.
  • Partner with product management and adjacent engineering functions on tradeoffs.
