About The Position

Grafana Labs is hiring a Staff Fullstack Engineer for the Application Core Services (AppCore) Usage squad within Platform, in the Foundations department. AppCore builds and operates systems that support Grafana’s business operations and customer experience. The Usage squad works on billing, rates, usage calculations, usage visibility, and cloud marketplace integrations, helping customers understand consumption and costs while supporting accurate, reliable billing processes. This is a hands-on Staff engineering role with a strong backend focus. The initial work balance is approximately 75% backend and 25% frontend, with the balance changing as squad priorities evolve. The engineer will lead complex technical work, contribute directly to implementation, and share ownership with other Staff and Senior engineers. The squad owns application code, data stores, deployment configuration, and supporting cloud infrastructure. The role is remote and candidates are sought in the US and Canada. Candidates in NASA’s Eastern Time zone are preferred to provide greater overlap with EMEA colleagues. The engineer will participate in the squad’s on-call rotation after onboarding.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience designing, delivering, and operating production backend systems, with the depth and judgment to lead complex work hands-on.
  • Strong experience building and operating production backend systems in Go.
  • Professional experience contributing to frontend applications using TypeScript and React or comparable technologies, and willingness to work across the stack.
  • Experience reasoning about distributed systems, including partial failures, retries, consistency, and interactions between services.
  • Experience with relational databases, including data modeling, schema migrations, query performance, and safe production changes.
  • Practical experience deploying and troubleshooting containerized services and jobs in Kubernetes.
  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure through code and working with CI/CD pipelines, environment configuration, and controlled rollouts.
  • Ability to investigate production problems using logs, metrics, and traces and turn findings into lasting improvements.
  • Record of delivering projects end to end, clarifying requirements, making trade-offs, and following through after release.
  • Experience working remotely, with clear asynchronous communication and dependable collaboration across time zones.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar domains and technologies, adapt as new information emerges, and take ownership beyond the main area of expertise.
  • Experience writing readable, well-tested software that other engineers can understand, maintain, and operate.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call and take responsibility for the production behavior of systems built.
  • Experience supporting colleagues through code reviews, mentoring, and constructive technical discussions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with usage metering, billing engines, pricing and rates, financial reconciliation, or customer-facing cost management applications.
  • Experience reducing operational toil and automating workflows involving recurring exceptions or manual interventions.
  • Experience with systems requiring auditability, traceability, or financial controls.
  • MySQL operations experience, including replication, database upgrades, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with Terraform, Jsonnet, and Kubernetes deployment configuration.
  • Experience with Argo Workflows or comparable deployment and job-orchestration tooling.
  • Cloud infrastructure experience involving managed databases, object storage, service accounts, and access controls, particularly on GCP.
  • Experience with data synchronization pipelines and BigQuery integrations.
  • Experience integrating with cloud marketplaces across AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience integrating with business platforms such as NetSuite or Salesforce.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or OpenTelemetry.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs for billing, rates, usage calculations, usage visibility, and marketplace workflows.
  • Build and maintain backend services primarily in Go, with Node.js also used in the stack, and contribute to TypeScript and React applications.
  • Improve the correctness and reliability of billing and usage workflows through validation, reconciliation, error handling, and recovery.
  • Replace recurring manual tasks with maintainable automation, clear operational workflows, and appropriate controls.
  • Maintain and evolve service infrastructure, including Kubernetes workloads, scheduled jobs, cloud resources, and deployment configuration.
  • Use infrastructure as code and automated delivery pipelines to make changes repeatable, reviewable, and safe across environments.
  • Investigate production issues across application code, databases, and infrastructure, including resource exhaustion, failed jobs, slow queries, and replication delays.
  • Plan and execute service deployments, database changes, and infrastructure migrations, including validation, monitoring, and recovery plans.
  • Build and maintain cloud marketplace and external business-system integrations as needed.
  • Deliver projects from requirements discovery and approach definition through implementation, testing, rollout, and production support.
  • Make changes traceable and testable to support audit requirements and clear explanations of system behavior.
  • Collaborate with product management, Support, DealOps, GTM, infrastructure teams, and adjacent AppCore squads to clarify requirements and resolve dependencies.
  • Provide technical leadership through design discussions, code reviews, mentoring, and practical improvements.
  • Participate in the squad’s on-call rotation after onboarding; improve dashboards, alert quality, runbooks, and recovery procedures, and follow through on incident findings.

Benefits

  • Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) for all roles.
  • Global annual leave policy of 30 days per annum, with 3 days reserved for Grafana Shutdown Days, subject to local legislation.
  • In-person onboarding with fellow new Grafanistas.
  • Career growth pathways and opportunities to grow and develop.
