About The Position

The Staff Engineer – Shop Technology is a senior individual contributor who shapes the technical architecture, engineering standards, and reliability of technology solutions used in Dutch Bros shops. The role spans point-of-sale, payments, labor systems, mobile and shop applications, order ahead, menu and pricing integrations, and other operational platforms. It provides hands-on technical leadership across application development, systems integration, automation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production reliability. The position designs complex solutions, contributes production-quality code, builds proof-of-concepts, reviews architecture and technical designs, conducts code reviews, troubleshoots complex production issues, and mentors engineers. It partners with Product, Engineering, Operations, Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, Data, Technology Support, and external technology partners to turn business needs into scalable, resilient, secure, and maintainable solutions. The role also modernizes Shop Technology by reducing manual processes and point-to-point dependencies, establishing reusable integration patterns and APIs, improving observability and operational resilience, and supporting the company’s growth. The position is based in Tempe, Arizona, and requires working in the office four days per week, Monday through Thursday. Fridays are optional remote work days.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve technical architecture for Shop Technology platforms and integrations.
  • Translate business and product strategies into scalable, maintainable, resilient, and secure technical solutions.
  • Establish reusable architectural patterns, APIs, events, and workflows that reduce tightly coupled integrations and duplication.
  • Guide decisions about system boundaries, integration ownership, authoritative data sources, and vendor versus internally developed capabilities.
  • Develop proof-of-concepts and reference implementations; lead and participate in architecture and technical design reviews.
  • Design and implement complex software components, integrations, APIs, and automation, and contribute production-quality code.
  • Conduct code reviews and provide actionable technical feedback; partner with engineers to resolve implementation challenges.
  • Design integrations across point-of-sale, payments, labor systems, mobile and shop applications, order ahead, menu and pricing systems, and other operational technologies.
  • Ensure integrations include appropriate retry, reconciliation, error handling, observability, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Establish and champion standards for coding, APIs, integrations, testing, deployment, documentation, and supportability.
  • Promote automated testing and improve CI/CD practices to reduce release and production-change risk.
  • Establish monitoring, logging, metrics, alerting, tracing, and operational dashboards for critical systems.
  • Define operational readiness requirements and help set availability, performance, reliability, and recovery objectives.
  • Partner with Technology Support, Infrastructure, vendors, and engineering teams during major incidents and complex production issues; lead technical root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Define resilience patterns for network interruptions, downstream failures, retries, offline scenarios, and transaction recovery.
  • Identify and automate manual processes, repetitive tasks, and fragile dependencies; simplify legacy integrations and reduce operational workload.
  • Provide technical leadership in vendor and implementation-partner engagements, reviewing architecture, APIs, integration capabilities, scalability, reliability, and security.
