Staff Engineer, Electrical Design

Celestica•Austin, TX

About The Position

The Staff Engineer, Electrical Design develops electrical systems and circuits for a range of applications, from researching concepts and creating plans through schematic and system-specification development. The role tests, simulates, validates, and qualifies designs, makes adjustments as needed, and supports the systems through manufacturing. It works with cross-functional teams that include designers, customers, manufacturing engineering, and project leadership to deliver robust, high-quality products. Designs are refined based on feedback from manufacturing, test, supply chain, reliability, industrial design, and simulation reviews. The position provides technical leadership across multiple domains, contributes to project planning and scheduling, and may serve as a recognized technical expert. It involves customer and supplier coordination, design documentation, system testing and troubleshooting, data analysis, and recommendations for system improvements. The role is based in Austin, Texas, and duties are performed in a normal office environment; occasional travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Experience with PCB design fundamentals, including single-ended and differential signals.
  • Proficiency in managing signal integrity challenges, including signal loss, impedance control, and near-end and far-end crosstalk.
  • Experience with single-ended and differential signaling up to 50 Gbps.
  • Ability to work with component models, including Touchstone files, and cascade them to create system models for simulation.
  • Experience simulating digital interfaces such as FPGA-to-DRAM and SERDES, and analog paths involving PCB, connector, and cable from signal driver to DUT.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D simulation tools such as ADS, ANSYS HFSS, or Sigrity.
  • Ability to calculate electrical length for signal matching.
  • Familiarity with interpreting signals in frequency (S-parameter) and time domains to assess application suitability.
  • Proficiency in generating and interpreting data-eye diagrams up to 50 Gbps for NRZ and PAM4.
  • Proficiency with Allegro or similar layout tools and schematics.
  • Expertise in PCB stack-up design, including fabrication limitations and cost trade-offs.
  • Experience with high-frequency board materials.
  • Significant experience measuring signal performance in a laboratory, including TDR and VNA measurements.
  • Ability to develop test fixtures, from custom test boards to ad hoc probing solutions for troubleshooting.
  • Experience balancing cost and performance trade-offs in signal-path design.
  • Experience with flex-circuit design for high-speed signaling.
  • Typically 4 to 6 years of experience in a similar role or industry.
  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of technical solutions in multiple domains.
  • Participate in project planning and scheduling.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to a team of engineers.
  • Review and interpret customer requirements and specifications, and provide customer feedback; may negotiate requirements.
  • Lead strategic program deployment and coordinate site-wide deployment efforts.
  • Promote industry best practices.
  • Design, modify, and implement systems that meet customer and Celestica needs, including creating schematics, bills of material, diagrams, and drawings.
  • Test, simulate, measure, and troubleshoot system performance.
  • Maintain relevant industry knowledge and awareness of regulations.
  • Solve complex problems and analyze and interpret data and information.
  • Liaise with suppliers, customers, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Recommend system modifications and create reports and documentation.
  • Enhance designs using feedback from manufacturing, test, supply chain, reliability, industrial design, and simulation reviews.
  • Support electrical systems throughout manufacturing.
