Staff Embedded Systems Engineer

Karman Industries•Los Angeles, CA
•$155,000 - $225,000

About The Position

Karman Industries is seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to design, develop, and qualify control electronics for energy conversion systems involving emerging high-voltage semiconductor technologies. The role enables integration with the Karman Heat Processing Unit (HPU) and subsequent product development, spanning systems design, control hardware, and embedded software. The team uses a first-principles approach to develop a cohesive system collaboratively. Karman Industries develops the Heat Processing Unit, a thermal management system for data centers and other industries built around a supercritical CO2 chiller and high-speed electrically driven turbomachinery. The company’s stated mission is to electrify global thermal systems and contribute to a more sustainable world. Compensation depends on role, level, location, and market alignment. Individual level and base pay are determined case by case based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities, and internal equity. Full-time hires may also be eligible for long-term incentives in the form of stock options and access to medical, vision, and dental coverage, as well as a 401(k) retirement plan.

Requirements

  • Degree in electrical, software, or controls engineering, with a specialization in power electronics.
  • At least 6 years of experience designing embedded systems, including familiarity with medium-voltage systems and grid control strategies.
  • Familiarity with software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) development methodologies and platforms such as Typhoon HIL, Opal-RT, or Speedgoat.
  • Hands-on experience with silicon carbide (SiC) power devices and modules.
  • Expert knowledge of electrical test equipment and safe handling of high-power systems.
  • Self-motivated, high-performing, able to self-manage and multitask, and an excellent communicator.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in medium-voltage solid-state devices.
  • Experience working with electrical safety standards in the UL or IEC family.
  • Experience with analytical design, turbomachinery testing, and engine testing.
  • Experience with mechanical packaging for electrical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy advanced controls for low-voltage and medium-voltage power conversion systems.
  • Develop sensing and regulation systems for medium-voltage AC and DC power.
  • Design and implement grid-forming and active front-end control strategies for bidirectional power flow, as well as low-level control for wide-bandgap devices and power electronics hardware.
  • Build and validate a high-fidelity hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform to enable design iteration.
  • Work with a cross-disciplinary team to develop all aspects of the Karman Heat Processing Unit.
  • Implement novel solutions to challenging problems, think outside the box, and challenge the status quo.
  • Develop analytical, physics-based, first-principles models to determine hardware performance and limitations.

Benefits

  • Long-term incentives in the form of stock options may be available to full-time hires.
  • Access to medical coverage.
  • Access to vision coverage.
  • Access to dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
