Staff Electrical Engineering Technician - Renewables Designer
About The Position
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician works under general supervision and performs advanced technical functions using electronic applications, standards, and document control processes to create or modify project deliverables. The role develops site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation, with advanced Civil 3D experience required, including proposed grading surfaces and plan development. The position is part of Black & Veatch’s Energy and Process Industries group and supports client needs related to Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The technician supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables, applying engineering principles and established design practices, using digital design tools, and coordinating with other design personnel. The role may include providing technical guidance, performing design calculations and material estimates, reviewing deliverables, maintaining schedules, and supporting field activities. Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days, based on manager discretion, performance, and work assignments.
Requirements
- Typically at least 5 years of related work experience.
- Advanced Civil 3D experience, including use of proposed grading surfaces and plan development.
- Ability to complete applicable pre-employment onboarding requirements, which may include background checks, drug screening, and motor vehicle records searches.

Responsibilities
- Develop site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation.
- Support engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables.
- Apply foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions.
- Use digital tools and design software, such as CAD, BIM, and 3D modeling, to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables.
- Provide technical guidance and may direct other engineering professionals and technicians to support quality and consistency.
- Apply standards, document-control processes, departmental guides, applicable codes, and company policies and procedures.
- Review project requirements and determine appropriate deliverable formats and contents when needed.
- Apply the company Quality Program to deliverables, demonstrate accuracy, and support continuous improvement and change management.
- Review design inputs for consistency and help ensure deliverables comply with applicable project codes and standards.
- Apply judgment when developing deliverables and interpreting inputs; handle difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise.
- Perform design calculations, detailed material quantity takeoffs and estimates, and related recordkeeping.
- Review the deliverables of others when needed.
- Define work assignments and maintain schedules when needed.
- Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange information needed for design development.
- Support field activities when needed.
- Focus on internal client needs while considering external clients’ interests and drivers.
- Seek and share knowledge of emerging technologies and processes.
