Staff Electrical Engineer

Valar Atomics•Orangeville, UT

About The Position

Valar Atomics is seeking an electrical engineer to lead the design and delivery of medium- and low-voltage electrical systems for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities. The position carries principal technical authority for the electrical discipline, including setting engineering standards, directing power system studies, leading substation and protection design, managing vendor programs, and engaging directly with clients and regulatory bodies. The role is part of the IC&E Engineering team within the Fuel Manufacturing engineering group. The team delivers electrical infrastructure from utility interconnection through medium-voltage distribution, process-area low-voltage systems, and emergency power. The engineer collaborates with instrumentation and controls, mechanical, and nuclear safety engineers in a technically demanding environment with a strong safety culture. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. Valar Atomics is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodation as required by law.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with demonstrated leadership of complex medium- and low-voltage design programs.
  • Advanced proficiency with power system analysis software such as SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or equivalent, covering load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, and motor starting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead substation design from concept through detailed engineering.
  • Deep knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, CSA, and IEC electrical standards for industrial and process facilities.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder).

Nice To Haves

  • EIT designation or P.Eng./P.E. registration, or active pursuit thereof.
  • Experience with nuclear facility electrical design and nuclear classification requirements, including IEEE 384 and CSA N290.7.
  • Familiarity with seismically qualified electrical equipment (IEEE 344).
  • Experience with IEC 61850 substation automation and protection communication.
  • Experience with DC systems and battery sizing (IEEE 485/1115).
  • Experience with utility interconnection studies and PPA technical interface requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain electrical load lists and perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting, and harmonic analysis.
  • Prepare arc flash hazard analyses to IEEE 1584 and substation grounding calculations to IEEE 80; size transformers, cables, switchgear buses, capacitor banks, and UPS and battery systems.
  • Develop single-line diagrams for medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, along with equipment arrangement and layout drawings, cable schedules, tray routing, and underground duct bank designs.
  • Specify electrical equipment, including switchgear, switchboards, MCCs, panelboards, transformers, bus ducts, VFDs, UPS systems, and standby generator packages; prepare area classification drawings and specify hazardous-area equipment.
  • Prepare protection relay settings studies and time-current coordination plots; specify relays and metering equipment; develop relay panel arrangements, DC control schematics, and MCC control wiring diagrams.
  • Prepare technical specifications and data sheets; evaluate vendor bids; review vendor drawings, type test reports, and quality plans; and witness factory acceptance tests.
  • Lead vendor pre-qualification, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations for major electrical packages; manage vendor document reviews and lead factory audits for safety-related or nuclear-classified equipment.
  • Prepare electrical installation specifications and support pre-commissioning, including insulation testing, continuity checks, relay secondary injection, and equipment energization; respond to site technical queries.
  • Coordinate motor and drive control interfaces with I&C engineers and coordinate substation layouts and cable penetration requirements with civil and structural disciplines.
  • Mentor junior electrical engineers; represent the electrical discipline at design reviews, HAZOP studies, AHJ meetings, and regulatory interactions; direct contractors and consultants through work assignment, technical review, and deliverable oversight.
