Staff Detector Scientist – PET Electronics

Siemens Healthineers
•$148,150 - $203,709

About The Position

The Staff Detector Scientist specializing in PET Electronics leads research, development, and implementation of advanced detector and electronics technologies for next-generation Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging systems. The role combines detector physics, analog and digital electronics, signal processing, and system architecture with hands-on hardware development and experimental validation. This is a hands-on individual-contributor research and development position with technical leadership responsibilities. Laboratory work—including experimental setup, hardware prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and validation—is essential. The position does not include direct people management or formal project management responsibilities. The role advances detector solutions from early research and feasibility studies through prototyping and system integration to commercial product realization, in collaboration with cross-functional teams and external partners.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related experimental science or engineering discipline.
  • Approximately 5–10 years of relevant research and development experience, including hands-on development of PET detector electronics in an academic or industry setting.
  • Demonstrated experience developing electronics for PET detector systems through academic research or industry R&D.
  • Hands-on experience with analog and digital circuit design, including schematic capture, PCB design, prototyping, debugging, and laboratory validation.
  • Strong understanding of PET detector technologies and architectures, radiation detection principles, detector physics, signal acquisition, and detector readout electronics.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with low-noise electronics, signal processing, and high-speed data acquisition.
  • Experience with ASIC interfaces, FPGAs, microcontrollers, embedded systems, or embedded electronics.
  • Understanding of detector performance characteristics, including timing resolution, energy resolution, sensitivity, count-rate performance, and image quality.
  • Experience using scientific programming and embedded development tools such as Python, C/C++, and FPGA development environments.
  • Ability to analyze experimental data, troubleshoot technical challenges, and translate research findings into practical engineering solutions.
  • Ability to independently develop, test, troubleshoot, and optimize detector electronics solutions.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary development teams, external suppliers, academic institutions, and research partners.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently drive technical initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research, design, and development of advanced PET detector electronics and hardware technologies for next-generation molecular imaging systems.
  • Develop detector readout architectures, including analog front-end electronics, ASIC interfaces, FPGA-based processing, high-speed data acquisition, and digital electronics.
  • Design, build, test, and validate electronic hardware through schematic development, PCB design, prototyping, debugging, and performance characterization.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, simulations, and experimental investigations to evaluate emerging detector and electronics technologies.
  • Analyze detector and electronics performance, identify technical limitations, and implement improvements to system functionality, reliability, and imaging performance.
  • Support system-level architecture development and integrate detector electronics with sensors, data acquisition systems, and PET imaging platforms.
  • Lead the transition of detector and electronics technologies from research concepts into commercially viable product solutions.
  • Collaborate with R&D, systems engineering, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and product management teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Partner with technology suppliers, academic institutions, and research collaborators to evaluate emerging technologies and support the PET detector technology roadmap.
  • Contribute to technical innovation through invention disclosures, patents, scientific publications, and other intellectual property.
  • Provide technical guidance and subject matter expertise to multidisciplinary engineering and scientific teams.
