Staff Backend Engineer - Licensing & Revenue Platform

Verkada•San Mateo, CA
•$150,000 - $300,000•Onsite

About The Position

Verkada is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer for its Core Licensing & Devices team. The team owns the licensing layer that converts licenses into revenue, including a double-entry accounting ledger that reconciles licenses into daily revenue recognition. The system supports Finance’s book closing and auditor traceability, and is becoming increasingly critical as Verkada scales and faces tighter reporting and audit requirements. This role will own the ledger’s accounting model, invariants, and correctness guarantees under concurrency, retries, and failure. The engineer will design and lead systems for enterprise licensing, including pay-as-you-go metering and billing, fixed-term commitments, and product packaging. The role also involves building reconciliation and controls that support daily financial close and trace recognized dollars to their sources. The Staff Backend Engineer will work closely with Finance, Accounting, Revenue, and Product to translate revenue-recognition policy into precise, testable system behavior. They will lead major features end-to-end, provide technical direction and mentorship, improve operational rigor, and help shape the platform roadmap. This is an onsite role requiring attendance five days per week and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency for FedRAMP compliance.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience building backend services with strong correctness, consistency, and durability guarantees at scale.
  • Depth in financial or transactional systems such as ledgers, double-entry accounting, billing, payments, or revenue recognition.
  • Understanding of idempotency, exactly-once semantics, immutability, and reconciliation, with experience building systems that rely on these properties.
  • Fluency in Python or Go; interviews will be conducted in one of these languages.
  • Track record of partnering with Finance, Accounting, or other non-engineering stakeholders and translating policy and ambiguity into reliable systems.
  • Ability at the Staff level to set technical direction across teams, shape shared architecture, and raise the bar for critical financial systems.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency for FedRAMP compliance.
  • Ability to work onsite five days per week.
