Staff Attorney (Jackson)
About The Position
Legal Services of South Central Michigan seeks a staff attorney for our Jackson, Michigan office. This position will focus primarily on assisting clients facing eviction, with some opportunities to work with other related legal areas such as assisting clients with public benefits. The position requires an attorney who is able to represent clients in court, both in-person and virtually. The position is hybrid in nature and weekly work in-person in Jackson, Michigan is required. MAP works to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those most affected by poverty, racism, and other structurally oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions. MAP has provided civil legal aid for those unable to afford an attorney for more than 50 years. Today, Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) has five legal aid offices in south and central Michigan serving 13 counties with an emphasis on homelessness prevention, domestic violence and elder abuse prevention, and assistance in accessing health care, food, and needs-based income programs.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice law in Michigan.
- Able to communicate with a broad range of people, but particularly people in crisis or who are unfamiliar with the legal system.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low income individuals and underserved populations through lived or learned experience.
