About The Position

Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) seeks a staff attorney for its Jackson, Michigan office. This position will primarily focus on representing clients facing eviction in Jackson and Hillsdale Counties, with opportunities to assist clients with public benefits and other related legal areas. The role requires the ability to represent clients in court, both in-person and virtually. This is a hybrid position requiring weekly in-person work in Jackson, Michigan. LSSCM is a division of the Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP), which has a 50-year history of providing civil legal aid to those unable to afford an attorney. MAP's mission is to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of individuals affected by poverty, racism, and oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in Michigan.
  • Ability to communicate with a broad range of people, particularly those in crisis or unfamiliar with the legal system.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals and underserved populations through lived or learned experience.
