Staff Applied AI Engineer (Forward Deployed) [NYC or SF]

Concurrence•New York, NY
•$240,000 - $300,000•Onsite

About The Position

Concurrence is hiring a Staff Applied AI Engineer for its Applied AI team, which takes the company’s platform into health systems and builds durable, production software for customer-specific needs. The role owns complex customer use cases from deployment brief through production, sets technical direction within and across deployments, makes architecture decisions, commits to timelines, and remains accountable for outcomes. The engineer builds reliable agent systems for clinical settings, addresses integrations with EHRs, legacy systems, and customer data, and ensures systems meet safety and evaluation standards before reaching patients. The role also identifies patterns that recur across customers and turns proven solutions into platform capabilities, including moving suitable work from agent reasoning into deterministic data lookups. The position involves close collaboration with customers, clinicians, and the platform team, as well as mentoring engineers and helping establish engineering standards and documentation. The role is based in person in New York or San Francisco. The team plans collaborative in-office sprints early in the week, a protected focus day on Thursday, and Friday for consolidating learnings.

Requirements

  • Experience shipping and owning complex production systems end to end, with real users depending on them.
  • Experience setting technical direction across multiple projects or teams and helping engineers make sound architecture decisions.
  • Experience building with LLMs and agents in production, or engineering depth to develop that capability quickly.
  • Ability to evaluate non-deterministic systems rigorously, using evidence rather than a small number of runs.
  • Ability to balance near-term costs with longer-term effects on the team and systems.
  • Comfort working directly with customers and clinicians to understand workflows.
  • Strong engineering craft, including building systems that surface failures before customers encounter them and remain operational during the engineer’s absence.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare experience, including EHR integrations such as Epic, Oracle Health, or athenahealth; HL7; FHIR; or clinical workflows.
  • Experience with Databricks, voice agents, or forward-deployed or customer engineering.
  • Experience at an early-stage startup.

Responsibilities

  • Own complex customer use cases end to end, from deployment brief through production and ongoing operation.
  • Set technical direction within and across deployments, resolve tradeoffs with the platform team, commit to timelines, and handle the most difficult implementation work.
  • Build agent systems suited to clinical settings, using agent and skill hierarchies and rigorous evaluations.
  • Ensure systems clear the company’s safety floor and evaluation gate before reaching patients.
  • Integrate EHRs, legacy systems, and customer data with the platform.
  • Turn field-proven patterns into first-class platform capabilities.
  • Move proven work from agent reasoning into deterministic data lookups where appropriate.
  • Raise concerns early about unvetted specifications, unsupported integrations, or scope changes.
  • Mentor engineers across deployments and help establish architecture and engineering standards.
  • Write documentation that enables new hires or coding agents to continue the work.
  • Work with customers and clinicians to understand workflows and deliver production solutions.
