Staff Antenna/ RF Systems Engineer

Fi Smart Dog Collar•Boston, NY
•$150,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Fi is seeking an Antenna Engineer to own end-to-end antenna design for connected products and shape real-world product performance. The role spans early system architecture through mass production, working with electrical, mechanical, and product teams to address constraints involving size, power, reliability, and manufacturability. Work includes RF design, antenna integration, tuning, and validation, establishing the technical foundation for Fi’s next generation of high-volume consumer hardware. The engineer will lead antenna architecture and contribute to system architecture, collaborate with internal and overseas teams, and partner with contract manufacturers and JDM teams on implementation, testing, compliance, and production ramp. The position requires hands-on design and validation experience, including electrically small antennas and RF testing. Travel to China may be needed.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience designing electrically small antennas for consumer electronics or similar products.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Ability to translate product-level connectivity requirements into RF system and antenna requirements.
  • Deep hands-on experience with custom antenna design in approximately the 600 MHz to 3 GHz range, including multiband designs, polarization control, antenna isolation in close proximity, and performance optimization near human or animal tissue.
  • Strong understanding of antenna integration, including using enclosures and mechanical structures as part of the antenna system.
  • Experience with antenna fabrication methods and materials, including LDS, FPC, PCB, stamped metal, and ceramic chip antennas, and understanding of material tradeoffs.
  • Ability to build prototypes using rapid methods such as hand-formed copper, milling, or 3D printing.
  • Proficiency with 3D electromagnetic simulation tools for antenna design.
  • Strong RF lab skills, including conducted and radiated measurements, antenna tuning, and management of cable effects when testing electrically small antennas.
  • Experience operating semi-anechoic chamber testing and supporting regulatory and compliance testing.
  • Ability to design simple schematics and PCBs for antenna prototyping and testing.
  • Familiarity with firmware and software requirements for RF validation, including sensitivity metrics such as BER and PER.
  • Comfort using scripts, such as Python, for test automation or analysis.
  • Proven track record leading antenna designs from prototype through mass production.
  • Willingness to travel to China as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end antenna design for Fi products, from proof of concept through mass production.
  • Lead antenna architecture and contribute to overall system architecture, including RF component selection, schematic capture, and RF PCB layout.
  • Design, optimize, tune, and validate antennas to meet constraints involving size, performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, industrial design, firmware, leadership, and overseas engineering teams to integrate antennas into products.
  • Apply established and novel approaches to improve antenna performance.
  • Partner with overseas contract manufacturer and JDM teams on antenna implementation, performance testing, compliance, and production ramp.
  • Translate product-level connectivity requirements into RF system and antenna requirements.
  • Manage external consultants and fabrication vendors as needed.
  • Conduct RF laboratory measurements, antenna tuning, and validation, including regulatory and compliance testing support.
  • Use scripts such as Python for RF test automation or analysis as appropriate.
  • Travel to China as needed.
