About The Position

The Staff Android Developer – Infotainment is a senior technical leader responsible for designing, building, and evolving in-vehicle Android applications and platform components that power our infotainment experiences. This role sets technical direction for a product area, drives cross-team alignment, and raises the bar for Android engineering quality across the organization.

Requirements

  • 8–10+ years of professional Android development experience, including shipping and operating large, complex apps or system components in production.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin and Java; comfort with C++/Golang for performance-critical or legacy components.
  • Deep understanding of Android internals and app architecture: Components, lifecycles, concurrency, permissions, multi-process and multi-user behavior.
  • Modern patterns such as MVVM and Clean Architecture, with a focus on testability and clear boundaries.
  • Development experience in 3D Filament/Unreal/Unity/OpenGL ES/Vulkan
  • Experience with large, modular Gradle-based Android codebases (multi-module projects, shared libraries, feature flags) and usage of AI (Curson/Claude) in development.
  • Hands-on experience building applications or middleware for Android Automotive or other embedded/IVI systems.
  • Familiarity with AAOS/AOSP for automotive: Framework services, CarService, VHAL/CarProperty, and profile/user models.
  • Platform constraints and safety/distraction considerations for in-vehicle UIs.
  • Experience integrating infotainment apps with: Vehicle signals and services (e.g., vehicle data, profiles, settings).
  • Audio, media, Bluetooth, connectivity, navigation, or projection stacks (Android Auto, CarPlay).
  • Proven ability to design scalable, maintainable architectures that work under tight CPU, memory, storage, and boot-time constraints.
  • Experience analyzing and improving performance (startup time, rendering, memory, threading) in resource-constrained or real-time environments.
  • Strong debugging skills across the Android stack (logs, traces, ANRs, crashes, binder issues, resource leaks).
  • Deep experience with Gradle, Android Gradle Plugin, and Android SDK/NDK tooling (build optimization, dependency management, reproducible builds).
  • Proven experience contributing to multi-release Android platform upgrades (e.g., 2+ major version jumps): Resolving API and behavior changes.
  • Updating AGP/JDK/Kotlin and SDK/build-tools.
  • Coordinating regression-fix efforts across multiple teams.
  • Comfortable working directly with AOSP-style trees and manifests (repo, branches, rebases, vendor drops).
  • Strong background in automated testing: Unit tests (JUnit), instrumentation/UI tests (Espresso), and integration tests.
  • Testable design and dependency injection for Android components.
  • Experience with code-quality and static-analysis tooling (e.g., lint, coverage, SonarQube or equivalent) and integrating them into CI pipelines.
  • Ability to define logging, metrics, and analytics strategies suited for in-vehicle systems with intermittent connectivity and strict safety/privacy requirements.
  • Demonstrated track record of technical leadership: Setting technical direction for a domain or product area.
  • Driving alignment across multiple feature or platform teams.
  • Experience mentoring senior and mid-level engineers; raising code and design-review standards.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with Product, UX, Systems, DevOps, QA, and external partners.
  • Clear, concise communication of complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Google Automotive Services (GAS), certification requirements, or xTS (CTS/VTS/XTS) test suites.
  • Background in safety- or security-sensitive domains (e.g., automotive, aerospace, medical devices) with relevant coding or process standards.
  • Familiarity with virtualization or bench-based development and testing workflows for infotainment systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end design and implementation of complex Android infotainment features and services, from requirements through deployment and maintenance.
  • Define and evolve application and system architectures (e.g., modularization, data contracts, error handling, state management) across multiple apps and services.
  • Lead technical investigations and resolution of complex issues involving Android framework, vehicle services, vendor stacks, and hardware constraints.
  • Partner with Product, UX, Systems, and Platform teams to translate PRDs and system requirements into robust Android designs.
  • Guide the adoption of best practices for performance, stability, observability, and testability in an in-vehicle environment.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers, providing guidance on design reviews, code quality, and debugging strategies.
  • Influence platform and toolchain decisions (Android version upgrades, AGP/JDK/Kotlin moves, CI/CD, quality gates) and drive their rollout.
  • Collaborate with Tier-1/SOC vendors and internal platform teams on Android bring-up, integration, and certification topics.

Benefits

  • Paid time off including vacation days, holidays, and supplemental benefits for pregnancy, parental and adoption leave.
  • Healthcare, dental and vision benefits including health care spending account and wellness incentive.
  • Life insurance plans to cover you and your family.
  • Company and matching contributions to a Defined Contribution Pension plan to help you save for retirement.
  • GM Vehicle Purchase Plan for you, your family, and friends.
